Looks like it's coming along great. Sorry I didn't see this earlier for some reason. The VLTOR A5 is probably one of the best stock options you can go with for a telescoping stock Grendel. I also like the VLTOR MUR.

If you don't own a 5.56 NATO carbine, you should have one just for general purpose.

I did the same, 5.56 build then decided to go 6.5 over 6.8. We have very similar build plans though, it's weird lol. I see your in the midwest, what area?

After running seemingly endless ballistics comparisons, I have come to the conclusion that the Grendel will do everything that the 6.8 SPC II will do out of 16" and shorter barrels. One thing everyone looks at is muzzle velocity, but then we could load 85gr bullets in even the 16" or 12" Grendels and get crazy mv too, but there's no point to it unless shooting varmints and 2-legged dogs, when we have so many great 120gr and heavier pills that perform so well even at moderate velocities.

I think I'll get some 95gr Hornady VMAX's just for SHTF possibilities, and blow away some jugs filled with gelatin. I can get 2700fps with 100gr NBT's out of my 16", so I'm guessing 2760-2800fps is possible out of the 16". That 95gr VMAX has a BC of .365 too.

Since the Founding Fathers specified that every able bodied male, 18 years and older, should own a common military long arm, with what equated to a basic load of ball, caps, powder, and wads in a transportable sack, ready to answer the call to defend his Nation at a moment's notice, I think that translates into every one of us needing a 5.56 NATO AR15, a fighting load harness, a basic load+ of 5.56 NATO ammunition, and a good training schedule to keep proficient with said weapon & equipment. That makes the best deterrent from any enemies, foreign and domestic from getting stupid about wanting to go after our freedoms.

Building AR's is addicting, just finishing my second Grendel build, next is a 5.56 that's in process. Wouldn't consider building a 6.8, seems redundant to me. All around the Grendel does everything the 6.8 does and does it better but then again I'm a bit bias.

Good luck on the rest of you build, so far looks nice.

Would be interested on how that experiment turns out...

I was just thinking of using food-grade gelatin warmed to 98 degrees, with maybe a layer of leather glued to the surface, and a 1x2 wedged in there to simulate a sternum. Cold ballistic gelatin tests make about as much sense as shooting a blended up cadaver after the bones and skin are removed.

At 2800fps mv, the 95gr VMAX will still be just at 2594fps at 100yds are my altitude. At sea level, it would be 2549fps at 100yds. I'm not sure what the expansion theshold is for the 6.5mm VMAX, but I bet it is still volatile at that range.
