KAC uses 3/4x24 on the SR25. Then the Clinton Assault Weapons ban went into effect in 1994, so only muzzle brakes could be installed on factory-new rifles for peasant consumption. Nobody really cared what thread pattern you had at that time.
Once the ban expired in 2004, the floodgates opened, and DPMS had started making guns at the end of the ban. They decided to use the 5/8x24 thread pattern. Since DPMS made the cheapest .308 AR on the market, people started buying them in droves.
AA started work on the Grendel before the ban expired, so there literally was no common thread pattern at the time. There's a detailed explanation of muzzle devices and thread pattern history in Volume II on pages 19-26, to include Flash Suppressors, Muzzle Brakes, and Sound Suppressors.
