The 6.5 Grendel is a very good candidate for the General Purpose Cartridge (GPC). Both the 5.56x45 and the 7.62x51 have their limits. Plus we are having to use two systems (infantry carbine, M4, DMR, SAW, med MG) with two calibers, two magazines and a lot of spare parts. This moves towards one system. While the Grendel can only match about 80% of what the .308 does, it exceeds the .223 while has similar recoil. The M4 is a lighter platform than the AR10. Same with the M249 vs the M240.

The 6.5mm has a high BC (.600) which means that it can push a 140 gn bullet at 2500-2700 fps matching the 7.62mm weighting 192 gn. http://www.eabco.com/6.5_mm_cartridges.html The 6.5x55 Swede is the standard for this. Modern cartridges that deliver similar performance are the .260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5x47 Laupa. The Grendel (6.5x39) is just too small to deliver similar performance (140gn will produce 2000 fps). I am not sure that lengthening the case will help. But current performance is enough to make it a very good GPC.

The 6.5mm is too small to be a magnum. Too much barrel wear. The .338 family (8.6x63NM, 86x71LM) has similar BC (.600) to the 6.5mm and does that mission very well. The 8.6x63NM would make not only a good long range sniper round but would work in the medium MG (M240) thus reducing the need for the M2 .50 caliber MG.
