    Hello from Central Texas

What a great forum.. I wanted something more than just an AR in 5.56, and after much research I have determined the 6.5 Grendel is the way to go.. It just made sense to then join a group of 6.5 Grendel loyalists..

I grew up with anti-gun parents; not the ban all guns kind, just the kind who doesn’t want to see their kids hurt.. Of course my cousin almost shooting out his sister’s eye with a BB gun didn’t help matters any..

My friends all had BB gun rifles when I was growing up.. But since I had to be able to sneak my BB Gun out of, and then back into the house, I was many kept to BB Pistols.. Thank goodness for the really nice Crossman and Daisy CO2 pistols which finally came out in the late 60’s early 70’s.. Consequently, I am probably a better pistol shot than I am with a rifle..

I’ve been a long time shooter and re-loader, and have competed in Bench Rest, Trap, Cowboy Action, and most recently I want to start shooting 3 gun.. I’ve been to a couple of matches at the local club and it looks like it will be a lot of fun and practical experience..

In my peak, I was reloading for 46 cartridges and 12 and 20 gauge shot shell.. I have since been cutting back, and would like to settle on about a dozen cartridges..

I am a “top shelf” kind of person, and value quality over a cheap price.. This philosophy has done me well over the 30+ years I have been shooting and reloading..

I’ve pretty well decided on an Alexander Arms top for my Grendel, and seeing Bill posts to the forum was one of the reasons for this decision.. Right now I am saving my money for the top and will probably do a lot of listening and learning..

    Welcome!!

You will not be disappointed with waiting! I am on my third or fourth AA Grendel, and my current two rifles shoot great! Go GDMR or GSR and you'll be a happy man!

Welcome from Austin. We need a separate group for central Texas since there are so many of us.

Welcome to the Texas horde. What part of Centex you call home? As mentioned previously, sounds like there needs to a meet/shoot somewhere, maybe Best of the West, for some Grendel action. Txgunner will throw in here, but I'll bet he'd be in for a meet/greet as well. Anyone else?

Thanks for the welcome guys.. Sure makes me feel like I found the right place..

To those who asked, I am living the dream here in Lampasas County on 21 acres.. I can hunt deer from my bedroom window.. I took several deer from the bedroom window on the property I lived on before buying this one.. These days I tend to feed the deer more than they feed me <grin>.. Last summer it was so dry around here - my tank even dried up.. I was putting out about 10 lbs of corn and sweet feed in 6 feed troughs 2 times a day, and kept a couple of water troughs full of cool clean water for the deer.. I had about 20 deer in all which would come to feed each day.. I used to love watching them from my office window.. I had the feed troughs and water about 75 yards away from the window..

I have a nice little range to 150 yards on the property, and intend to build a small shack with 2 firing points.. The shack will be air conditioned so shooting in the Texas summers won't be so bad - I am tired of spending those days at the range when temperatures exceed 100 deg.. And yes, I am a range dog - that is one who generally spends the whole day at the range.. I can't tell you how many times I closed the "Eagle Peak" range in Austin..

I do get down to San Antonio often, but have never been to any of the area ranges.. I love White Wing hunting in the south zone though it's been years since the last time I was able to do so.. Other than visiting my mom (I was born and raised in San Anton) I mainly go down to San Antonio for the gun shows, and will be down there at the Saxet Gun show come the first weekend in May..

I have tried to go shooting at the "Best of the West" two times now, and found them closed both times.. The first on Easter Sunday, and then again the weekend before the big LaRue 3 gun shoot last weekend.. Still I do want to go back and tackle those 500 and 1000 yard targets.. I love long range shooting..

Years ago when I lived in Austin, I used to spend the day at the Hill Country Range (south of Austin) shooting at the 425 meter range out there.. I can say how happy I was to find out about the Best of the West.. We used to call the Hill Country Range "Scary Larry's", and if you ever met the owner, you would know what I mean.. The last thing you ever wanted was him to come out of his shack and talk to you..

If anyone wants to meet for a day shooting at the Best of the West, I am game.. One thing though.. One week out of 4, I am the on-call for my department, and have to say close to the ranch here - for example this weekend is my time in the barrel..

Thanks again for the welcome.. Looking even more forward to getting my first Grendel.. flk k

Howdy and welcome to the Horde! Sounds like you have a nice place there. I love that area.

I've heard about Scary Larry's but never had the opportunity to shoot there. BOTW is a great place to shoot with good people running it but you do need to call first due to the events they host.

Sounds like we need to plan a CENTEX meet and shoot!
