For that matter, the easiest demo system could be a registered M16 with an open bolt FCG and the MGI Rate-Reducing Recoil Buffer. I just wish there were higher-cap mags.

Sounds like the Grendel/Colt LMG that Variable wanted to make a few years ago, except I think his would've fire closed-bolt.
...and the MGI Rate-Reducing Recoil Buffer.
How does that compare to constant-recoil?

Well, wish in one hand and poop in the other, and see which gets filled first.

On a serious note, wasn't Bill Alexander awhile back looking into adapting RPK drum mags to 6.5 Grendel? That'd be great, if it could be made to work.

Yep, I tried to get Bill A. to make me an LMG upper in Grendel, but no one would bite. I offered to commit up front. Sabre was making barrels for him and they would have been perfect for it with the setup they had. His opponents offered to make me one, but I wasn't up for that. "They" couldn't do a chromed bore anyway.

As for open bolt use-- Every time Colt presents an open bolt AR system to the .mil they reject it. It's too similar to a regular M16/M4 and comes with the attendant hazards of negligent discharge from the operator forgetting he's using an open bolt and letting a round off... I'm torn on that issue, but I kind of see where they are coming from.

Randy was supposed to be working on that one, but he's dissapeared. I haven't heard a peep from him in a long time...

I still want a Colt LMG clone in Grendel, as long as it has a chromed bore (kinda useless without it...), but no one wants to make me one. I'm screwed tight for cash of late, but I'd likely dump something just to get the funds if someone would actually make the dang thing.

The Shrike with a Grendel kit would really be fun. There's a guy on here who said he's doing a 1919A4 conversion to Grendel using nylon links, but havn't heard an update on it.

For the military Grendel, it would be nice to see the focus on making an LMG with a substantial bolt to take the pressures this cartridge is capable of. It would open some people's eyes for sure, especially when they see such a lightweight platform out-gassing the M240 at distance, and weighs half of what a SAW does.

Well, be the driver. Make it happen.

If you don't do it, I very much doubt anyone else will.

Would one of the modified/ beefed up barrel extensions & bolt combo work on a Shrike?

As the Shrike sits now, it uses it's own bolt, bolt carrier, etc. Pretty much nothing AR would be compatible in the upper. A new one would have to be made that was Grendel specific in dimensions. I.E. Grendel Shrike bolt, Grendel dimensions for feed tray, top cover, and receiver, plus their fit to each other. It's the kind of thing that Geoffrey Herring (ARES) could probably do, but with the history of the Shrike to date, I'd be doubtful it would happen...

If someone like Colt had the Shrike instead of Ares then I'd say they could do it in a heartbeat if they actually had the will, but Ares has trouble enough just trying to get 5.56 guns out the door. I believe that Herring has a good design in the Shrike, and he is a pretty smart fellow to have designed it but they have some serious issues with actual production. Hopefully they'll get that ironed out some day. If I were him I'd be working on the prototype for a .308 Shrike upper for Colt's CM901... After I figured out how to get product out the door on the 5.56 guns and make the customers happy...
