  • 1860 yard coyote

I know this isn't a 6.5 Grendel , but this is way cool!
"the Dartman" a guy from Canada who has plenty of coyotes to shoot at,
nails a coyote at 1860 yards. "the Dartman" was using his .338 Lapua savage
and "the neighbor" was using his .300 winmag savage.
They have dropped plenty of coyotes and even a white tail at over 1000 yards, but never a coyote this far!

      Both the 300 WinMag and 338 Lapua use a Nightforce 5.5 - 22 x 56 with NPR1 reticles, mounted on a 50MOA base.

At that range how the hell do they confirm it's a coyote and not someones dog that has wondered into the area?

I don't think they knew at the time they posted that video. They mentioned "One fell short...", and as they shot at the same time, who's to say? Didn't see them mention a recovered bullet, as that would be the only way to be reasonably certain. Perhaps they wish it to remain as a "WE got the coyote" moment.

            Really good spotting scope?

It was over a stinkin' mile away... something tells me a .223 or 22-250 will not adequately make that trek... I think it's pretty awesome.

Not good enough to see the other coyote. Yeah, proper target identification at that range could be a problem. I assume that the coyote was down and stationary at the time of the shot, or they would not have taken the shot. So ID would have been that much harder.

they use a vectronix terrapin rangefinder, civilian version (around $2000.00) so that helps with the ranging at those distances. They also regularly see & shoot coyotes out to 1000 yards (practice makes perfect!)
The neighboring farm has cattle and the coyotes are thick out there-
The farmers encourage them to shoot all they coyotes they want.

Don't be to hard on those guys. The skillfull hunter can identify his prey by many factors. Shape of the dog would narrow the species. Are coyotes regular vistors to this area? Apparently the coyotes were a nuisance. Are there any resident dogs close by? Domesticated dogs and predators have distinctly different gait and movement. Coyotes are very deliberate in travel and movemant; you won't see a coyote meadering and wagging it's tail. The list goes on and on, but hopefully these guys have the proper skill set and don't just go out blastin'. I would not shoot unless I could positively identifly my target. I hope those guys do the the same.
