    Reloading cost

While reviewing cost per round comparisons for factory ammo on GunBot.net and Ammoseek.com, I decided it was overdue to calculate the actual local cost per round of our favorite reloads. Here are two:

    6.5 Creedmoor
    Hodgdon H4350 (41.2 gn) 1359 rds/# 8#@$224.95 > $0.17
    CCI large rifle BR2 1000@$59.95 > $0.06
    Berger 140 gn Match Hybrid bullets 100@$37.95 > $0.38
    Nosler 6.5 Creedmoor brass 50@$70.99 > $1.42
    initial cost/rd > $2.02 > $0.60 thereafter

    6.5 Grendel
    Hodgdon CFE223 (31.2 gn) 1795 rds/# 8#@$219.95 > $0.12
    Wolf small rifle magnum 1000@$27.95 > $0.03
    Lapua 123 gn Scenar bullets 100@$41.84 > $0.42
    Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass 100@$101.99 > $1.02
    initial cost/rd > $1.59 > $0.57 thereafter

I have been fortunate to have Selway Armory near me so shipping isn't an added cost. http://www.selwayarmory.com/65grendel.aspx I also have access to cheaper components through my connections with my shooting club made with some of the local ammunition manufacturers. If a person does a lot of shooting , keeping an eye out for specials and local club ammo "component" buys can save a person much needed shooting funds. If they have another gun ban scare all bets are off. Better to stock up when the political drums are quiet.

My problem is finding any H-4350 for my .260 Rem., whereas I have oodles of available powders to choose from for the 6.5 Grendel.

All the factory ammo for 6.5 Grendel is actually meant to work in gas guns, whereas none of the .260 Rem. ammo other than custom shop loads will work in my AR10.

As such, the Grendels get shot a bunch, and reloaded for more since it is more affordable on both routes, as Nukes has calculated with his 6.5 CM for comparison. Factory ammo availability is a huge factor for me, since it is so much easier to grab a bunch online and have it ready to go.

I had my Boy Scout Varsity Troop impacting steel with the Grendel at distance last month for our shooting campout down at North Springs with factory 123gr Scenar from AA, and 123gr SST from Hornady. Can't shoot reloads in Boy Scouts, so .260 Rem is a no-go there, unless I had a bolt gun.

I'm working hard to bring up the rising generation with a solid foundation of safe and effective firearms handling. I kinda wish BSA would allow the NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course as a Merit Badge. Black Powder Rifle is already entrenched, with adults handling the powder measure, charging the guns, priming them, then handing them over for the boys to shoot.

Based on Montana's earlier endorsement I used Selway and have been very happy.

We have comprehensive access to components locally through Bruno's. In order to keep that comprehensive access, Bruno's has to pay retail for some of their stock, but even so, their retail-plus-margin is still competitive when I consider shipping and hazmat fees from other sources with nominally lower prices.

Until recently even H4350 and Retumbo were on their shelves. Last week I checked and found Accurate 1680 in inventory, so we drove to Bruno's. Walking in, the children and I passed the guy walking out with all "our" 1680... so we tried some H110 and we were quite pleased.

In doing these calculations there was a pleasant surprise. Even using Lapua brass and Berger Hybrids, it is costing "only" $1.05/rd for subsequent reloads of .338 LM.

Errata: My data should read rounds/keg, not rounds/pound... but you probably already noticed that. :-)

I haven't been able to find Retumbo forever locally. That looks like a great load!
