This was at about 80ish yards the other day, 123Amax out of the 12.5". Conservative estimate at 200lbs, but i'd say realistically he was closer to 275 than 200.

Forgot to add.....He was slightly quartering away on the first shot. Held just behind the ear. He bolted on the shot, second one hit him just in front of the left rear leg and he rolled on that one. Entrance was visible on the second shot, not exit. No sign of entrance or exit on the first shot. It remains a mystery.

Was that a factory (Hornady, AA, Black Hills, PF) round with the 123 AMax or a handload. If a handload, what was your "recipe"? I am thinking about working up a load using 120 gr. Barnes TTSX or Hornady GMX bullets. Hornady factory 123 AMaxs and SSTs shoot really well in my Grendel, but I'm a little skittish about the bullets on a big hog. Not sure why I can't shake the concern because I know many people have used the bullets effectively. Maybe it's just an excuse to do load development work, which I enjoy as a challenge. My "6.5" = 24" AA Overwatch upper 1/9 twist, NC based US Tactical lower, standard A4 6 position stock, AR Gold Trigger, JPS SCS buffer, Vortex 6-24 x 50 FFP PST with EBR-2C MOA reticle

Had another one that wasn't quite this big do the same thing a couple months ago. Point of aim just behind the head at about 60 yards, he bolted on the shot. Made it about 40 yards, but no blood anywhere. No entry/exit and that one we did a pretty thorough examination for it.
I actually prefer the Amax's to the sst's especially on our deer. But, i shoot nearly everything neck/head and prefer the more extreme expansion these give.

Very nice. The 123gr A-MAX continues to demonstrate that it performs like a Nosler Ballistic Tip. That's a sweet little suppressed SBR as well.NRA Basic, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, RSO

I could practice twice as much with an AMAX or SST compared to the TSX or GMX bullets and they are less finicky about seating depth, I think, thus faster load development. I think maybe I have bought too much into the "tough to kill a hog" marketing push on the GMX and TSX bullets, as the cause of my strong preference for using a monolithic bullet. Seems plenty of experience among the horde that says the AMAX or SST are just fine. (Maybe if I had a 300 lb hog in my sights, but that size is pretty rare near here.)
BUUUTT....on a hog that size the head/neck area is a pretty large target.....and is very effective shot....

I've killed 31 hogs (mostly boars) with the 6.5 Grendel, and all have been shoulder shots, using mostly TSX's, but a handful SST's. The 6.5G through the shoulder of a BIG boar is NO problem. They're not bulletproof, and if you're shooting a factory AA 120 TSX it'll be a rare day if you don't get a full pass through center punching the shoulder. Biggest hog to date with the 120 TSX has been 300lbs (50" chest girth), but I've also shot a range of them between 220-270 most of them DRT w/ a shoulder shot. Those that did run, the furthest to my recollection was approx. 50 yards. SST and TSX on shoulders will git'r'done! (I aim for the opposite shoulder on quartering shots) But I might start trying the Double Naught neck ping you never know =)
OH...and I only shoot behind the shoulder if it's a quartering away shot, meaning I'm actually aiming dead center for the opposite shoulder. If broadside, a behind the shoulder shot will likely end in some tracking. Double Naught did a great post once about varying shot placement depending on animal angle, shooter position, etc.Last edited by 81police; 04-15-2015, 08:53 PM.John 11:25-26
