Ruger American ranch 16” - Stinky Coyote - 11-18-2020

wouldn't it be nice if ruger chambered this in 6.5 Grendel?

https://ruger.com/products/HawkeyeHunter/specSheets/57125.html

stainless walnut hawkeye in .204 ruger, so they are doing the micro length cartridge...why not Grendel? dang...i'd be so into this

Tried to talk Weatherby into doing a Vanguard Mini. Told no way no how.

A-holes

Cough up a couple - ten million dollars to bank-roll a new production line and they might accommodate you. Might even cut you a deal on a rifle. :p

I'd like to see Tikka make one but they wouldn't be interested. Too small a market.~Riuma

Stinky Coyote Wrote:Will we truly be happy when Sako chambers their micro xs action in 6.5 Grendel? I think so. I’ll take walnut with the red recoil pad and stainless. I’ll also take a carbonlite or a finnlight 2. I would also be interested in kimber Montana, and ruger Hawkeye stainless walnut. Sort of sucks that the Grendel seems to only draw budget rifles to chamber. The cz is the highest quality option we have.
CZ was a natural because they already made the 7,62x39. Other outfits would need some serious retooling to make Grendel function. Frankly, I think Ruger should have left the Grendel with the rotary magazine and not gone to the AR mag. All the cuts in the bolt and resulting lack of bearing surface make them a real PIA to operate. MY buddy likes mine but I have a set of stones, one of which exactly fits the bolt guide cut and stoning that out was the beginning of a big improvement. The mill cuts were just awful. Once the tool marks were gone and there were no razor sharp edges, it began to be more tolerable.~Riuma

Good report, thanks!

I'll assume those shots were at 100 yards and if so, on a new(er) gun that doesn't have a lot of shells through it, that is actually pretty good. My RAP started to really settle down after 150+ shots. Again, I epoxied the barrel channel to stiffen it up making sure the barrel was still free-floating and all the oil was cleaned off the action screws and action threads and torqued per Ruger's specs slowly tightening each screw from back to front then cycling the action, (outside), with live ammo until I had it running smooth. I used ASC 5 and 10 round mags at first because they didn't have the spring tension of the AA and CPD mags. I removed a little "spring" from an AA to get it to work. After awhile, I can run just about any mag through the rifle but a hiccup here and there on the CPD and AA mags prevent me from using them as dedicated mags for it. The ASC's are 100% on mine.
I would be very happy with those groups at 100 yards using factory ammo on a newer Ruger American or RAP. Nice shooting and thanks for sharing this.

I think we all just need to start emailing. I would kill for a 5.5# carbonlight in grendel.

Ruger American ranch 16” - Bucktail99 - 12-03-2020

Got my optic in And mounted swfa 3-9 hd. Also cut down a duramag so it doesn’t jab you in the back while slung had to take the follower to the belt sander in order to get it to hold 5 rounds but all in all it came out good.heres a pic
Got a mdt chassis coming (could not help my self) had a couple good storm checks this little rifle is getting dressed up pretty quickly !

i would too, anything sako and stainless/alum, their actions, bottom metal and magazines are as good as it gets...this cartridge deserves that imo

i've chronied my american ranch grendel a couple different times with factory hornady black and average 2386 fps...within 6 fps of your factory sst number...i wonder what reloading could do to improve on these numbers, can't these bolt guns run up to 62,000 psi over these factory 52,000 psi numbers? i would expect another 50-100 fps depending on barrel length no? i don't reload so have no actual experience

as it is i have no need for more hp than the factory ammo anyway so i'll never need to reload so all is well in my world

Ruger American ranch 16” - Bucktail99 - 12-08-2020

It’s hard to know what propellant Hornady is using but I have seen better accuracy with my hand loads the hard part is finding the perfect recipe during the great reloading component shortage of 2020 but I think I’m really close to finding the magic numbers albeit I have no complaints with what I have so far. The pressure signs I have right now aren’t very concerning but that might change when my chamber gets dirty. I think I’ll drop it back to no pressure signs and settle in.

Ruger American ranch 16” - Dinny - 12-08-2020

The best way to fix your Ruger is to sell it and buy a Howa.

Ruger American ranch 16” - Bucktail99 - 12-08-2020

No fixing needed as of yet Dinny, but if I do I’ll message you so you can re-use that line on me!

Dinny Wrote:The best way to fix your Ruger is to sell it and buy a Howa.

haha, the only way to do the howa is timney trigger, bell & carlson sporter or the pendleton stock, and the aftermarket hinged floor plate bottom metal...how much that all add up to? more than a cz, and a lot more than a ruger, so the only way to do a howa is with a cz or a ruger instead lol, both have great triggers that better the howa in 'feel' (howa breaks good, just a flimsy cheap feeling trigger blade and safety...neither the cz/ruger have this problem) and both the cz/ruger have great magazines and stocks to start with, the bottom end of a howa including the stock is complete garbage and cheap like the trigger feel...

i'm way happier with my ruger american ranch and cz american than the howa

Bucktail99 Wrote:Just picked up the new Grendel (first bolt Grendel for me) I wanted a 16” bolt gun to use for hunting suppressed. I have hunted with my 16” AA incursion suppressed on Kodiak island and killed 3 deer on that one trip. The gas guns just start having cycling issues when you put the can on and it make the gun and magazine extremely dirty! Cycling issues is not something you want when solo hunting Kodiak Island due to the largest brown bears on the planet. So I’m going simpler and hopefully lighter.
The American set up with optics, bipod, full mag and suppressor is a full pound lighter than the ultra light AA incursion with optics and a full mag. The American has its own problems that I need to work through, rough cycling, magazine play, feed ramp, not balanced, and I dislike the stock very much. But for a 500$ gun I’ll give it a shot. The rifle all dressed weighs 9.5# the same as my tikka superlite creedmoor so it’s Packable on sheep/goat/deer hunts. Any input On fixing my problems would be appreciated!I will post pics and data as soon as I shoot

well i'm putting a MDT-LSS XL-Gen2 chassis on my ranch, running the magpul moe-k grip and ctr butt stock, a few ergo m-lok rubberized rail covers, it already wears a leupold fxII 6x36 i added a cds-zl turret to for dialing up anything longer than mbpr and using the 10 round c-products mags, i'm going to build two more for my boys, only difference being will be scopes, they will wear leupold vx3i 2.5-8x36 that i'll add cds-zl turrets to also, dimensionally these scopes are identical but the fixed 6x is a couple ounces lighter than the variable 2.5-8's, they will be 8.5 lbs with 10 rounds of ammo on board

these are our 'do all' rigs, including defense work, easy to slap a light/laser or two point sling, they are short enough, and nice you can adjust length of pull on the fly for running a pack or to fit anyone, you can even add folding stock adapter if you want a rig that's about 28" overall for strapping to pack or throwing right inside it, if we can't kill what we need out to 400 yards with these then we are bad hunters Wink

sure the factory stock is lighter, i'm adding about 1 lb to go this way as i'm about 7.5 all up with factory stock but the added versatility of chassis is worth it and the weight is still totally acceptable as an athletic do all that can still go up mountains etc.

hope that helps

p.s. other thoughts are holosun 407/507c reflex sight, solar/battery, set up like AR guys do using a 1-6x scope and then do the 45 degree can't to a leupold deltapoint pro or the one i'd choose are the holosun green dots for the close range fast stuff 0-50 yards etc...options go up with the pistol grip/AR type chassis modularity

I live in Oregon. I'm very interested in following your builds in preparation for what's likely to come in my state.

I have my RAP and love it. However, (always a damn however), since it uses AR mags, it limits your OAL of the cartridge and thus, some extra capacity. Especially with longer/heavier bullets. I use ASC mags in my RAP and can load a little longer than if I use E-Lander or CPD mags.
I can push the ELD-M 123 to 2470fps with 28gr of 8208xbr. Any more and I show pressue signs and poorer accuracy. I do the 130 Berger hybrid up to 2350fps with 27.4gr of H4895. Better accuracy at 27.0 and 27.2.
I can do better with CFE223 but I give up temp stability. Same with AR Comp.
