I agree with you BFT. Before they revised it, the Berger 90gr VLD bc was .551. I have a box left over. The Berger 90gr LRBT's bc was listed as .512.

On MidwayUSA, they list the bc of the Sierra 90 as .504.

I wonder where they got that number from?

Not questioning the velocity. Funny thing is I got 22 Nosler box velocity out of an 18"

Along with ejector marks you can feel with your finger.

No question this will eat into grendel sales for those looking for a long range shooter or varmint gun. It won't do as well as a hunting rifle though.

Number is from Sierra website for their .224 90gr SMK.

I think of Sierra as being honest when it comes to BCs, but I'm still calling it an error. Can't be better than Berger's VLD of the same weight.

Good cartridge, but not supersonic to 1300yds even with the 90gr VLD that they aren't loading.

The number they're showing is 2700fps mv, but we don't know the barrel length. Some say 20", some say 24".

Either way, it's a factory option for AR15s backed by Federal, so for these gas gun matches and varmints, it makes a great round.

I would have liked to see a 6mm but with good brass. Somebody needs to jump on the 6mm Grendel factory ammo support wagon for competitors.

None of the .224 bullets come close to the 6mm target bullets.

BFT,
I like you, do not believe that number. I went checked and you are right they list it at .563 above 2080fps.

I plugged the numbers being thrown about into JBM ballistics, I used both the Litz #'s and JBM library #(.480), along with 2700fps, according to that, it barely makes 1300yds. If you use the .563 number it makes it.

Will have to see what the real world numbers work out to be.

Surprised someone hasn't already. Juice the 6.5 Grendel case to 40mm instead of 38.6mm, move the shoulder up a bit with a neck appropriate to 6mm . . . voila! Wink

From the 6.8 forum

Here it is straight from a Federal employee-
Justin Johnson 90gr at 2700fps from a 24" barrel. We are getting 2630 to 2650 our of 20" gas guns. #federalemployee

I would like a rifle in either 22/6.8 OR 6.5G case
I also would like to see what shakes out with a 6mm variant too!!

6.5G case would offer more powder?

From Whitley's 224AR page he says case offers about 36 grains of water capacity. Don't know what the new 224V case would hold.

Just got back from scouting with Blade from local Feddy plant- the Valk is a different animal than the .22 Nos., but not by much.

It's the base diam. that's different. One is 6.8 based- other is 5.56 based. Bolts are not the same. Extractor groove is huge on the 22 Nos. Both use the 6.8 mags.

Performance data is iffy at this point., more input is asked for from consumers of these 2 rounds, that are ballistically similar. The consumers that actually handload for these 2-3 rounds.

the shoulder and chamber is shortened on the 22 Nos-- so a std 556 case wont chamber inside of it. Google this stuff. It's an awesome read for an entire day...

I don't think it will ever be a threat to the Grrr. Maybe short range inside 75 yds. I like my Grrr. I'll stay there. I'm happy.

.257 Ted - if it's still around , maybe a look into?

Yep. That's the bullet to beat.

I remembered the case is already done, as well: 6mmAR Turbo.

Rickc, what is the barrel length of your 6mmAR Turbo 40 Improved?

Now that it's been confirmed that the stated 2700 fps Muzzle Velocity of the new .224 Valkyrie is from a 24" barrel, and given that Sierra shows the Ballistic Coefficient (BC) of their .224 diameter, 90-grain VLD bullet to be 0.563, I researched the 6mmAR Turbo 40 Improved --- (http://www.6mmar.com/6mmAR_Turbo_40_Improved.php)

Using the respective Muzzle Velocities of the 6mmAR Turbo 40 Improved, with the Berger 108-grain BT bullet and Alliant 2000-MR, from 26" and 18" barrels, I extrapolated for the Sierra 110-grain HPBT Matchking bullet, with a stated BC - 0.617, and dialed-in a Muzzle Velocity of 2750 fps for the 6mmAR Turbo 40 Improved (A) to compare against the .224 Valkyrie (B). NOTE: This comparison is at sea level, with a 10 mph crosswind ---

BFT,
How about a Faxon group buy barrel in 6mmAR Turbo?

We are all set to do this, except for dies.

.224 Valkyrie? Future competitor to the 6.5 Grendel? - LRRPF52 - 10-19-2017

Good rule of thumb to get a more realistic idea of LR performance is to use the G7 drag model, or doppler even better. The G1 tends to only work well within 600yds, since G1 is based on a flat-based bullet model, not Boat Tail.

.224 Valkyrie would have been an interesting service rifle cartridge, as well as LMG and Sniper round.

6mm would allow more barrel life and higher BC, plus more retained energy.

Hornady kinda dropped the ball with the 6mm Hagar by making the case so long that you can't mag feed VLDs or any of the 105gr and higher target bullets.
