Magpul Hunter American stock - grayfox - 01-18-2019 Harpoon1 Wrote:For your sake, I sincerely hope it works in your gun. I tried some Black & SST’s today thinking the polymer tips may help, wrong! It’s actually worse using them. The first round strips off and feeds no problem. The second one however, almost without fail, would porpoises and jam. Then, the remaining rounds are so far forward in the mag, because of the spacer, it’s almost impossible to back off the bolt just enough to release the pressure on the first round without backing off too much and picking up the second also. Now you’ve got a double feed to deal with. In a word it sucks! I actually think those Magpul AI mags, which are based on a 308 casing, have feed lips/follower springs/feed lengths that won't work for the grendel, the Grr case is just a tad narrower and definitely shorter, that feeding them from the mag is trouble. While not in magpul I had this issue with some savage 308-based mags and the same feed issues, porpoising (love that term!!) etc etc was happening all the time. The feed lips need to be closer together and the length from rear to where they open up (to allow for round's tip to rise up), and from where they open up to the feed ramp, well all those dimensions need to be grendel case-size specific. Now this is all my own opinion just to be fair. Magpul Hunter American stock - Harpoon1 - 01-18-2019 “OD Green”? I didn’t even know the had one in OD Green! ![]() Cool. Magpul Hunter American stock - TNhuntsman - 01-19-2019 Sounds like the grendel in a AICS mag night be a feed lip issue, tried loading a single round in the magpul .308 mag and spacing it correctly in the mag and the feed lips let the nose of the bullet rise higher then it should and jammed. Might have to tweak the feed lips on my mags when I get them if there is a feeding issue, hopefully it's just the gap of the feed lips that's the issue and not the length as the feed lips themselves, the factory AR mag feed lips extend slightly further forward then the feed lips on the magpul .308 mag. The AR mags feed just fine in the factory predator stock. Magpul Hunter American stock - grayfox - 01-19-2019 Looks like that to me..... charcoal color outside. Actually I didn't know there were different colors, these are just the 5-rd ones from, hmmmm, midwayusa I think... maybe optics planet. anyway... Magpul Hunter American stock - Harpoon1 - 01-19-2019 Well, if the AR mags would have fed “just fine in the (my) factory predator stock”, I wouldn’t have bothered to try finding another solution. Maybe I just got a lemon? The problem with mine is not that the nose gets too high, it’s the rear of the case gets launched when it clears the feed lips, driving the nose down and getting wedged in the throat of the feed ramp. And the AI AICS mag feed lips are further forward than the Magpul AICS feed lips. At least the part of the upper lip that holds downward pressure on the round is. Having said that, you may be entirely right, that this is just a feed lip issue. So, I look forward to you getting yours up and running and see what you can come up with. Magpul Hunter American stock - Harpoon1 - 01-19-2019 grayfox Wrote:Looks like that to me..... charcoal color outside. From what I’m reading they supposedly changed something in the original 308 mags to help with feeding non-308 rounds. Then they marked them with Brown Follower and indicator on the botttom of the mag. The new 308 version now uses a gray follower and indicator. The shape of the followers look identical to me, so, maybe it’s the spring rate/tension? Magpul Hunter American stock - grayfox - 01-19-2019 I'll look in the morning to see any diff's, I have several in use, for 308, 6.5, 243... maybe I can see some deltas... Need to correct just about all of what I said earlier, just reread the blurb from Magpul again. The original has the Green follower and lock plate. Well, it looked Grey to me. ![]() The new version with the Brown follower and lock plate is for the Ruger 3 lug bolt design. And that’s what they recommend using with the Magpul Hunter stock. However, both worked flawlessly for me today and the 243. Magpul Hunter American stock - Harpoon1 - 01-22-2019 Stuck the Grendel action back in the Predator stock and have been monkeying around with bending the feed lips on an ASC and E-Lander mag. The E-Lander metal is much thicker and way more malleable than the ASC or C Products mags. The ASC mag seems to be working much better, I still wouldn’t call it “fixed” but, it’s much improved. Just when I think I have, the E-lander tuned in, it starts to balk again. I don’t know, how you work the bolt definitely affects the outcome. Get in a rhythm and it seems ok, take a break, and try it again and it’s like has a mind of its own. Turns out it’s not so much the feed ramp as I initially thought either. The rounds are just short enough that when the rear end clears the feed lips, if it’s pushed up a little too hard by the mag spring, and/or the nose is not quite high enough, the tip of the bullet misses the chamber and it gets jammed into the back of the barrel. Then it’s game over, until you back off the bolt and start shaking the gun, trying to align and feed the tip into the chamber. It’s all a balancing act and split second timing to pull it off. The saga continues...........my Howa action arrives tomorrow. Magpul Hunter American stock - Frontier Gear - 01-23-2019 Quote:.........my Howa action arrives tomorrowThe Howa and the CZ are both known for trouble free feeding with the Grendel and both use a proprietary mag. The Howa is a center feed and I "think" that the CZ is as well. The Grendel can just be a bugger to get to feed reliably at times. I've had two RAPs in 6.5 Grendel and both of them were really picky about the position of the mag. The bottom of the mag "rocks" back and forth in the stock. If the bottom of the mag was pushed forward at all (the back of the mag moved down in the action and the tip of the bullets pointing up more), it didn't want to feed. If it was too far forward, the bolt would actually skip over the top of the round completely. Also, the AR mags are much stiffer and there is a lot more drag between the shell case and the feed lip than there is on a Howa mag. Mine were leaving big ol' scratches on my brass. In the end I gave up, sold them both and purchased another Howa. I hope that you can figure yours out though and post the fix for everyone else. Magpul Hunter American stock - A5BLASTER - 01-23-2019 I think the main problem with the ruger is that ruger. Tryed to shoe horn a quick to market setup instead of doing their homework and machining the action properly to feed even with ar15 mags. It blows that the magpul stock wouldn't work with the aics mags and the 6br adaptor like I was told they would. Magpul Hunter American stock - Harpoon1 - 01-23-2019 Both setups, the factory and Magpul, single feed by hand just fine with high rates of success. As soon as you try stripping rounds from the mag, it all goes downhill. It’s almost tolerable using the modified ASC mag in the factory stock. Almost. I don’t care sloppy magwell fit but, if it would feed even somewhat reliably, I could overlook it. It seems to me, the biggest problem with AI AICS/Primal Rights conversion is it appears to be over sprung, at least the 5 round version does. So when the rim clears the feed lips, it gets catapulted, driving the nose of the bullet below the back of the chamber. Once I can figure out how to get some tension off the spring and still feed all 5 rounds, I’ll give it another go. It’s ridiculous, they can figure out how to get the Grendel to feed reliably in an AR but, have so much trouble with a simple bolt gun. I don’t get it. Put it back together and try it out. If removing one flat is too much stretch the flat spring by hand and retry it. It’s been my experience that you can’t “stretch” a spring back out, once it’s been cut/collapsed, that’s the “new” length and poundage. Sure, you can “stretch” it out but, once it’s been compressed again, it’s going to revert back to were it was before being “stretched”. Anyway, the more I examine this AI/Primal Rights conversion, the less hopeful I am it’s going to work with the Grendel and the RAP action. Comparing it to the Howa mags, a reliable, working example. The feed lips are shorter on the AI mag, stopping right at the top of the case shoulder, whereas the Howa feed lips extend all the way to the top of the case. And this is where the trouble begins, as the case negotiates this transition zone, over the shoulder and neck of the case below it. With the Howa, the feed lips help support the case through this transition zone, with the tip of the bullet being held relatively stable, and parallel to the bore axis. However, with the AI conversion, the feed lips stop, right as the upper case starts to ride over the shoulder of the case beneath it, causing the nose of the round being stripped to pitch down before it even clears the mag. And once in this nose down attitude, it’s a crap shoot whether the round is going to feed properly from this nose down attitude or not. Bummer! Having said that, Ive gone ahead and collapsed a section of the spring in one the AI mags to relieve some of the force during this transition and I’m going to start bending the feed lips and see where this takes me. Can’t win unless you play! Still blows to have too do so much tweaking to a setup that the manufacturer says should work. I would seat one round the appropriate spacing in the Magpul AICS and then try to load it but it would jam. I have a AI AICS 5-rd coming and have a 5-rd and 10-rd primal rights conversion kit already, may hold off on buying the AI AICS 10-rd until I mess with the 5-rd. Wonder if primal rights will refund my money if thier conversion kit doesn't work correctly. To take the “rocking” out of the mags, I use some HVAC foil tape on the back of the mag. It’s a semi-permanent solution at best but, it does work and snug things up considerably. Yes you did, I just didn’t make the connection then, went right over my head! ![]() I wonder if you can run them right out of regular “stock” 308 AI mag? That would affectively lengthen the feed lips and help stabilize/guide the case through that transition zone. The Grendel has mild enough recoil that the extra room in the mag might not be an issue/problem? I hate to say it and jinx myself but, I think I may have finally cracked the code on the AR mags/factory stock. I’ve got the E-Lander feeding them virtually everytime now. Took long enough!

Have you tried running them in the “stock” Magpul AICS mag that came with the Hunter, WITHOUT spacing them? Just shove them all the way to the back mag, and let her rip? Magpul Hunter American stock - TNhuntsman - 01-24-2019 Wonder if a .223 magazine could be modded to work, feedlips might be to the right spot, maybe just opened up a bit. https://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/short-action-10rd-aics-magazine-223-5-56-prod71761.aspx |
