SH,
Doesn't the gas tube have to touch the barrel nut?
I am going to try the factory crimp die. I received it today.

If your variance was very small I would think accuracy would be the best but I have read many people report that is not so.
Your velocity is 200 fps higher than Hodgden reloading site shows.

Bj

That vertical usually means you need more powder, or your rifle is bouncing on the bipod. My 260 AI was bouncing on bipod and giving me about 5” of vertical at 800yds, loaded the bipod and started shooting into an area of 3”. Try loading the bipod and see if that helps.

Ric,
I'm shooting from a Lead Sled. I pull back into my shoulder with my pistol grip hand and my foregrip hand.
With the foregrip I was pulling back on the front of the receiver magazine housing.
In the past, I would hold my hand around the foregrip and pull back.

6x45 - StoneHendge - 01-26-2018

WIth the vertical stringing, recoil moves the rifle backwards and in the absence of the ability to move backward, it follows the least past of resistance which is the stock rolling up the shoulder. If the bullet is still in the barrel as it rolls upwards......
My guess is that that is what’s going on, but I don’t use lead sleds. Maybe make sure the stock is firmly against the rear of the sled before you set your shoulder. I would also keep your non shooting hand off the rifle

Gas tube should not be touching barrel nut.

I haven’t found good variance to always coincide with accuracy. I’ve gotten the same ridiculous variances with AR Comp in Grendel that other folks get here, but never got it shoot better than 3/4 MOA in my 22” JP (which is capable of 3/8).

We’ll see about that velocity. If it wasn’t CO’s worst year for snowfall in the history of the universe, I’d probably have a Lab Radar by now.

How can the gas tube not touch the barrel nut?

That's similar to the nut I have on the 6x45 upper. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003282729/yankee-hilll-machine-free-float-tube-handguard-barrel-nut-aluminum-matte

It can not touch by being perfectly aligned and going straight through the center. If it touches, vibration will travel down gas tube into the block and into the barrel. Its possible - they had it centered pretty damn well on the factory assembled upper. I'm going to check to see if its centered before my next range trip and if I don't get anywhere playing around with COAL, I may bite the bullet and buy an ALG handguard and nut for it. Would be nice to use it with my Atlas bipod anyways and I do have another use for the Harris.

If you strip the bcg and run the carrier through the upper and feel the gas tube hitting the key you need to adjust the tube so it doesn't cause any issues.
It will effect accuracy if it isn't a smooth transition.
Driving an AR is better than the free recoil style used in benchrest shooting.

I made sure the gas tube was centered and entering the gas key dead center.

How that bhw barrel shoot now.
Find a good load yet.

I haven't had a chance to do more with it. I would like to replicate my loads with small pistol primers since I got a 5 shot group of 0.625MOA.
People told me not to use small pistol primers. Something or other about blowing up or I'll shoot my eye out.Cool

The CCI 550 small mag pistol primers are the same as the CCI 400 I think.
I've used them when I was out of the 400's.
I usually use CCI 450's.
I've got best accuracy from them and rem 7 1/2's.

I think I might have some of those from my 357 mag days. Thanks.

Hey Stonehenge,
How are the P dogs doing. Are you raining down any terror yet?

I have been taking a detour and getting a BHW American 30 and 6x6.8 to shoot.
I have posted on ar15armory since these are SPC and not Grendel variants and I wasn't sure how much more leeway I was allowed.
I also needed help in forming brass for these wildcats and Greg who moderates there developed the cartridge.

The 6x6.8 is really a sweet cartridge. I got a 0.75 MOA five shot group my first loading with full power loads.
I wish BFT would hurry up the 6mm Grendel group buy.Big Grin

Been busy and even though we're in the midst of the worst winter Vail has ever had, it still has actually been snowing. Decent weather days get allocated to crawling under and around busses rather than having fun. Haven't been to the range since I started the velocity thread but I do have 50 of the lighter charge that showed promise in the high 2900s worked up. I'm also loading a ladder of 70 gr Nosler BTVs tonight and those little buggers are pretty damn sexy for a varmint bullet. P dogs in CO are safe from me until June since your not allowed to shoot them on public land from March thru May. Probably won't get to any until I head down to NM in April. Hoping to get to the range Sunday if the weather report holds out, but that's dependent upon my figuring out why none of the switches for the rear of a bus aren't working. Its not a fuse or relay, and if you have any idea of how a Mini Coach is put together, you'd understand that's no easy task!

I feel your pain.

I am doing DOT inspections on 100+ on highway vehicles and trailers...in the field.

Why would a bus engineer (employed by the allegedly almighty Warren Buffet) run the switch power for the passenger door, passenger compartment lights and heat fan through a relay the Ford manual identifies as Modified Chassis Run/Start? I'd call to ask them, but the last time I called the factory about that particular bus, they said they had no record of it being made. Sunny and 50 Sunday. Knock on wood - really looking forward to seeing how the 70 gr NBTVs do........

For the same reason they would install an inline fuse behind the dash that is the circuit protection for courtesy lights/aux power socket/trailer tow aux power/... spent an entire day tracing a circuit since nobody could tell me where the fuse was since it was not in either of the PDCs.

I guess the day could be considered successful given that the wind was a gusty 20-25 mph and I have some winter rust. Confirmed velocity of the "light" 25.3 gr Benchmark load (27 is Hodgdon max) at 2956 sd 6 es 21 with 7 shots. Given the wind, I'm pretty happy with how the 70 gr Varmageddons grouped. The group in the left was 5 shots and the right was 6. Both are right about MOA

10 mph of wind = 0.8" at 100, so with the way it was bouncing around today, i would attribute quite a bit of the horizontal stringing to the wind. I also set up right next to the wall with it on my left with a left to right wind (had no choice - it was busy) so I couldn't feel the wind and wait for lulls like I normally would, so there's also likely a bit a aerodynamic jump differential in there too.

Did very good on 6" plates at 350 and 450 and reasonably well at 550 given the target is a little over 2mph wide out there - misses weren't by much. Flat based bullets didn't seem to have more wind drift than projected - was holding same wind values for 120 gr scenars out of my 18" Grrrrrrrr.

25.2 gr of Benchmark with the 70 gr NBTVs shows even better promise. 5 shot 2954 sd 9 es 26 but accuracy potential seems better. This was with the Magnet to on and it may have shifted. There was also of course the wind.

MOA in total but the 3 on the right are < 1/2 MOA. Usually a group like that during development with Magnetto on does much better with it off (knock on wood)

Gonna work up a bunch of those to see how they do. Those are seated at 2.310 which is ASC mag length + a little wiggle room - and they are off the lands. Fits in the case real nice. Bearing surface protrudes just below the neck and the little spitzer boat tail doesn't really protrude much below the shoulder. I only went up to 26 gr and got 3068 sd 12 es 30 vs Hodgdons 27 gr max at 2960.

And on a Grendel note, I did manage a few hits out of my 18er at 1016 once I figured out what the jetstream was doing. Nothing like holding for 16' of wind on a 16" plate at 1k and getting 2 in a row Cool

6x45 - bj139 - 02-20-2018

SH,
Looks like you are getting some good groups.
I reloaded some 6x6.8 and American 30 today.
I plan to shoot tomorrow.
I will get back to the 6x45 next.

6x45 - StoneHendge - 02-20-2018

This is the 70 gr NBTV at 2.31 (ASC mag length). 27.2 gr of Benchmark goes just above the base of the shoulder. Talk about making full use of a case!
