Howa Mini-Action Torque - ripcord - 02-28-2017
New Howa here and I want to check it over well before I shoot it to eliminate as many possible problems before hitting the range. To that end: What is the proper torque setting for the Howa's action screws? Time to fire up the Wheeler FAT wrench.

I've been meaning to ask this same question. OP, Thanks for asking and thanks for answering Matt. I need to adjust mine as I think I torqued if down to 30 inch pounds. My gun is already shooting pretty well, but will be interested to see if it changes anything good or bad.

i have to note a bit of caution, if you torque the action screws too hard, you run the risk of cracking the floor plate. proceed with caution.

That was my concern a couple nights ago. I torqued to 25 and noticed the floor plate felt like it was flexing due to over-torquing. Stopped there, I did not want to risk breaking that plastic.

I stopped at 45...on my second floor plate, The first one did split. I did notice a slight difference in the fit below 45. 45 pulled the action closer to the receiver, so make sure you get good feeding from the magazine and good ejection with the bolt.

I don't want to argue with a manufacturer, but 50in/lbs is a TON for the material in question?? 30in/lbs is a standard in the industry for a Tupperware stock????

Page 23 of the Distractions says 50-55 inch lbs.
I actually read the Distractions cover-to-cover.
They include bolt disassembly as well.
I didn't know these have a 3-position safety, which is a nice feature, where you can lock the bolt down even with the safety.

Its got aluminum pillars so it's not like a tikka stock... you can't crush it.

It's the polymer bottom piece for the trigger guard and magazine well, which sandwiches the stock between the action and itself.
If you apply too much torque to the action screws, you will split the floorplate assembly.

Ok fair enough - I've torqued mine tight - around 45inch lbs with the wheeler fat wrench and it seems ok. I do my tikkas at 35in-lbs in the factory tupperware... I've gone to 50 on the tikkas and crushed the stock but the plastic bottom metal was fine... ended up replacing it with a manners

I took the bottom plastic floor plate off mine and drilled the takedown screw holes out to accept some steel tube and epoxied it in. like mini pillars it worked well..
