Optimal Charge Weight Test at 200yrds ? - StraitShot - 07-07-2019
Well while I am waiting for my new Chrono to arrive (splurged and got a LabRadar) I have been reading about accuracy testing for different loads. There are two that seem to be the most in use.. the Ladder Test and Optimal Charge Weight Test. My range only goes out to 200yrds. So I have opted out of the Ladder Test in favor of the OCW Test.
I have read several different ways to apply the OCW test and the heart of it seems to be the round robin approach to testing the loads. In simplest terms, firing one round from each load group in succession; first round from charge group 1 at target 1, first round from charge group 2 at target 2, first round from charge group 3 at target 3 etc then repeat second round from charge group 1 at target 1 and on, until all rounds from the charge groups are expended into their designated targets. This is mostly conducted at 100yrds.

My questions are:
1) Is there any reason this cant be done at 200yrds ? I know the groups will open up and its easier to see at that distance, plus bullets seem to settle down at 200yrds and beyond .
2) I cant horizontally place that many targets across my target frame, Im going to have to stack rows Cant imagine that it would matter but better to ask those with more experience .
My loads will be:
Powder: H322
Bullet: Hornady ELD 123gr
Case: Norma
Primer: CCI BR-4
Barrel: 20
Charge Progression 5 rounds each at: 24.0, 24.3, 24.6, 24.9, 25.2, 25.5, 25.8, 26.1, 26.4, 26.6

OK - so he did the OCW at 200yrds and the Ladder at 400yrds. That answers my first question. Watched as he went through the interpretation... I think the OCW nodes were more clear...

If you are certain enough of your shooting and have real confidence that you don't pull or push any shots...
then an OCW approach will work. As for me, I'm not as certain of my abilities in that, so I have adopted a more physics-engineering approach, and let the mechanics speak to me about what is working and what doesn't. After all, MV and SD don't depend on where the shot lands on paper. For that reason I use the optimal barrel timing theory.
