A5 Buffer & Spring for future 12" SBR - SKelt - 11-19-2019
Like the title says, I'm going to SBR my 12" pistol. Once I get approved I'm going to put an A5 Buffer tube on it to increase my LOP with my B5 SOPMOD stock.
My upper is built with the 12" Group Buy barrel and an Odin Works Adjustable Gas Block.
Two questions that I'm sure someone smarter than me can quickly answer:
1) What buffer weight should I start with? I'm completely new to the A5 size/needs
2) What flat wire spring should I purchase from Tubbs? I want increased lock force and reduced spring noise

With an adjustable gas block, you can go lighter with the buffer. I'd probably go with an A5H1 but even an A5H0 would work, just tune the gas to compensate.

Thanks to the kind gentleman above I recently put together a Lilja 14.5" barrel, using the vltor a5 and a tubbs fw spring that has 42 coil count. I've been slowly breaking in the barrel per Lilja's directions and haven't even shot for any groups yet but man is this thing smooth. I decided upon not using an adj gas block at the moment and that I would use the buffer weights to compensate if need be so I've been playing with the tungsten weights to see how they affect function.
Started with the A5H1, holding the gun very loosely when firing and it seemed to send the brass a bit more forward than I'm accustomed to with a properly gassed system. Tried it with 2 tungsten weights (A5H2) and I believe that is the potential sweet spot as in feel as it indeed changed the brass ejection slightly and just because I could I made an A5H3 to see what it would do with the casings which piled up in a nice pile being a bit closer to 3:00 or so. Full lock back on empty using all configurations, no dented brass from bouncing off the deflector, though that said I had previously cut about a 1.5 coils off the ejector spring. Hornady American Gunner ammo used for all break-in/function testing.
Now that I've taken the time to do the recommended break-in the plan is to run it this weekend and to see just where I am going with buffer weights on this build. As mentioned by feel I think I'll end up with it being an A5H2 but time will tell. With an adj block you could likely easily go to A5HO and if you happen to have a std carbine spare buffer in your box I would buy the A5H2 just to have the option of having a couple of tungsten weights you could play with as the price difference is only a few bucks. I originally bought the A5H1 and had planned on buying some T-weights anyways as I needed one or two for another gun. I am really liking the Vltor tube/buffer combo, it threaded in perfectly leaving the bolt face right where it should be just in front of the ejection port when manually pulled back to rear which isn't always the case with other receiver extensions.
I would buy this set-up again without a doubt as it's quiet, feels really smooth.

I can probably save you A LOT of money and time and still give you the results you want..................
Buffer spacer to go in the A5 tube. Use a normal carbine buffer (whatever you desire and runs your gun....) and spacer inside the A5 tube giving you the longer LOP you desire.
Otherwise buying the A5 buffer is going to run you a lot of extra coin not to mention they are sometimes hard to come by and out of stock.
Primary Arms does have the full tube/spring/buffer combo in stock, but the seperate tube and buffers are all out of stock

You can get the A5H0 buffers for a good price at Midway. Then you can cannibalize any heavy buffers, you won't be using anymore by switching to the A5 system, for the tungsten weights.

I can safe him even more money. Forget the A5 stuff and put a Moe fixed carbine stock on it and get the magpul prs buttpads and get the same length if pull the a5 would give plus better cheek weld and no chance of stock wobble from useing a adjustable stock.
Are just drop a rifle extention and Moe fixed rifle stock and have the same lop and no stock wobble either.
Just saying. More then one way to skin that critter.

This is probably the best answer, actually, If the gun is going to have a LPVO and used for critters and hunting.
A CQB role SBR used indoors and outdoors would benefit from having the ability to adjust.

Please note that Odin works makes their gas blocks to use with their barrels (which butt up directly against the shoulder). To line up correctly you may or may not have to allow for a slight space (usually between .025" and .03125") which is usually the space of a hand guard cap.
Key word is "may".
Some gas blocks do fine....others can cause a FTF because of gas port misalignment.
