6mm PPC vs 6MM AR - Lemonaid - 02-16-2020
I have plans to re-barrel a 6.5 Grendel RAP and was thinking to go to a 6mm AR. I have a fine Ruger Mdl 77 Mark II VT in 6 PPC that is a sweet shooter but has the slow twist rate. I have dies, powder and such for the 6 PPC.
So is there any benefit to re-barrel to 6mm AR rather than 6 PPC ?

Depends on what you are looking to do with it IMO. If light bullets and accuracy are your game the PPC is a great cartridge. If you want to reach longer ranges using a similar case the 6mm AR or Fat Rat.... Throat it longer for the 107 class bullets to be seated long and correct twist for it.
Bottom line it is your $ get what you want.

Thanks, my $ is in short supply and I don't know exactly what I want! How much longer is the throat of the 6mm AR than the 6ppc?
I gather there may be about 100 fps velocity gain in the 6mm AR but at an unknown pressure level? (to compare same loads in each)
More case capacity in the 6mm AR but how many more grains? Very few loads in the 6ppc are listed as compressed so there appears there is no urgent need for more case capacity for the 6ppc.
I would be very happy with either, cost for each would be close to the same.
For the 107 class bullets Hodgdon has load data for the PPC, maxing out at 2600 for varget and 4895.
Benefits for the 6mm AR = Velocity, case capacity, freebore
Benefits for the 6ppc = longer neck, a wealth of published load data, possible slightly longer barrel life, factory ammo.
This decision won't be easy!
Strange, the Hodgdon load data for the 107 sierra HPBT has the twist rate at 1-14 but Sierra says you need a 1-7 to 1-8. Perhaps they tested without regard to bullet stability.

I have a different suggestion for ya......... the 6 Creedmoor.
And Ruger already makes it in the RAP so there should be some barrels around!!
7.5 or 7.7 twist if I recall.
I bought one. GrrrrrrrREAT little 6mm!!
Does the 103, 105 maybe even some 107/8's...
I do a 103 eldx in it, also working a 90 gr TGK for the grandkids. It's already brought me venison. Plenty easy shooting.
Shooters are taking it out to 1000, me - more like 300-600 yds target. (Ok I'm not a super-sharpshooter but I can do hits out to 600).

grayfox, my plan is to keep using AR mags so I need to keep to a cartridge that will fit and feed in one so 6 creed is out.
LR1995 6 BR is a valid contender, it will fit in the AR mags. I even have 6 BR brass that I use to make 22 BR rounds. Velocity looks nearly identical to 6ppc so I'm not seeing the advantage. Brass for the BR is more expensive and harder to find and less choices than Grendel.
I'm leaning toward the 6PPC as I am familiar with it and it is a joy to shoot.

Nothing wrong with a 6 PPC. If I was already totally set up with a 6 PPC, I probably wouldn't be in any hurry to change to anything else. Very expensive to change calibers.

And I've got nothing against the 6ppc or 6AR/6Grrr... I have looked at them both tbh.
Guess for me I settled on the 6 CM b/c it was easier to get into that one... for a bolt gun anyway.
Certainly going for one of those is a fine idea.
