Alright, let's see who has good data, notes, and 1st shot hit ability. I like to constantly test my cold bore skills. No walking the gun in or fine tuning poi/poa. This is solely a test of your data, ability to read conditions, and quickly place a precise shot the first try (think medium/long range hunting).

I had a couple hours right at sunrise this morning so I took advantage of it to go and figured I'd document it in case it wasn't a terrible result. This doesn't have to be done at a quarter mile, the further the better. I just happened to be at 461 yrds, which was the furthest I could shoot in this location, and thought it was a catchy name.

Here are some pictures of my "range" and the conditions I was working with. I was shooting directly into the sun, luckily it hadn't risen above the horizon yet. Due to this my video quality isn't the best b/c of the combo of low light/high zoom of my spotting scope with the phone on it.

walking to the target a few minutes after the shot, you can see it's starting to get lighter out (the little white square right above the right hand vehicle path is the target)

and the shot, I dialed 9.5moa for elevation. It was 65* out at 1800ft elevation.

I finished it up with a 5 shot group. The group center was only 1" above the aiming dot.

Here's video through my cheap spotting scope. It's long and most of it is the dead time b/t hitting record and getting into position. The shot actually breaks around 41 seconds, so I have it starting a few seconds before. I left the video unedited for posterity and good faith. The dead time b/t me hitting record and breaking the shot I'm literally loading the gun and finding the target. I didn't even have the shot setup before hitting record. I was even cold and trying to set everything up as quick as I could. lol

You can see in the above pics how the shot hit in the dark paint, I couldn't resolve where my hit was at the truck. But on the video, at the moment of impact, you can see it slightly change if you watch where the shot is.

At 400 odd metres I wouldn't expect the elevation to be off by much... It's not really far enough for atmospheric changes to affect it too much other than wind

It's a good distance to practice at though - I reckon it's about the maximum effective range of the grendel for hunting medium sized animals

For my grendel load it's 500 yards for me on velocity for hunting..

That's the point of this though... if you have bad data then this will show that. The point isn't to try to hit the huge steel plate, the point is to try to hit the tiny center dot at whatever range you're at. Every shot I shoot I want in that 6" circle I painted to represent vitals of our small coues deer/javelina, but I'm trying to hit that small center dot.

It's nice here b/c in the winter I can do this below 30*. Then in the summer I can do it when it's over 100* and high gusty winds. Bad load data numbers in the ballistic program will show themselves when the conditions can vary so much.

My max range is the range where I can no longer guarantee that vitals shot on a cold bore.

A Friend and I were in Wyoming a few years ago shooting some long range. Not a very good picture but 5 for 5 on steel target at 880 yards cold bore first group. My Friend had Sierra infinity program and used that for dope. I was shooting my 20” Shilen 6.5 Grendel with Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 mil dot with a hand load, 31.0 grains CFE223, CCI 450 and 123 grain Nosler CC.

Vascar2... how big is that target? Do you know which impact was your first one?

Try it with just one single shot at a small point... post your results!

This was at 7200’ while were basically in Wyoming working on a Friend’s hunting cabin and shooting prairie dogs plus sight seeing. I doubt I’ll be back at that elevation for a while. I don’t remember the exact sequence other than my first hit was center mass on the silhouette target.

My Friend had been shooting his 300 Win Mag and I shot one group before a storm front started moving in and winds started swirling. Lightning was getting to close for comfort and we got back to the cabin just in time. Just guessing, I’d say the steel plate is 20”-24” wide but seems like it is a full size silhouette.

I usually shoot at about 450’ ASL in the midwest. The terrain was easier to see misses in Wyoming than here in southern Illinois. I’m only a novice with a rifle and this was a memorable trip.

Imaguy,

Did you hold off for the first shot or just hold center?

You had some visible(in the vid) right to left mirage, which would explain the leftish hit.

That's some good shooting either way.

I held dead center. The mirage was visible (not sure why it's showing right to left there) but wind was not a factor. Dust from the truck just hung in the air and took about 3 min. to clear, moving slightly left to right. The center of the group ended up being about 1.5" right, so I attribute the "leftish" shot to shot dispersion.

Good shooting.I shoot 600 yards at my gun club. And I be happy with those results all day.
