List - Bolt Action Rifles that SHOULD chamber 6.5 Grendel - Stinky Coyote - 08-21-2020

Let's get this party started, feel free to add to the list. I'll start with the obvious ones that already chamber .223 length cartridges, couldn't get any easier to bring a Grendel to market with these first ones.

https://choose.sako.fi/global/sako_85/85-carbonlight?caliber=223%20REM
and various other 85's from sako with the xs action length, finnlight 2, a walnut stainless etc., 18-20' barrels be ideal please, and their new s20 looks interesting but no xs action length, the detach 5 & 10 round mags would go over well if they do end up bringing something shorter with that one

https://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-seven/model-seven-threaded
doubtful remington will get on board due to the 6.8 spc but nice little rig that wouldn't be hard to offer a Grendel

https://www.savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=57577
this with a 20" barrel would be pretty rad, savage makes .223's and has done 7.62x39's so they have everything they need but a reamer, for various models

https://www.kimberamerica.com/adirondack
omg, they chamber in 300 blackout! 37" long at 4.75 lbs dry? Kimber...6.5 Grendel = amazing sheep rifle!!!!

http://cooperfirearms.com/classic
a real gentleman's rifle in 6.5 Grendel, lets go Cooper!

https://ruger.com/products/HawkeyeHunter/specSheets/57125.html
and ruger already has the reamers lol, shorten that barrel up and offer 2 versions, 16" and 20", hello Ruger? also, any of their ruger No 1's, real easy, but a short barrel stainless would be awesome

https://choose.tikka.fi/global/tikka/t3x-compact-tactical-rifle?caliber=223%20REM
tikka, i chose this one for the 10 round magazine bottom, but they chamber most tikka models in .223, but some variations of tikka's in 6.5g would go over well

https://www.blaser.de/en/products/firearms/bolt-action-rifle-r8/r8-models-with-synthetic-stock/r8-professional/
blaser could do it easily with their modular systems, and a k95 single shot would be pretty swank

https://weatherby.com/store/vanguard-weatherguard/
good howa actions with proper bottom metal lol

https://www.browning.com/products/firearms/rifles/x-bolt/current-production/xbolt-max-varmint-target.html
the browning x-bolt pro with a 20" and that carbon fiber stock would be pretty dang sweet, but they have .223 length x-bolts so anything should be possible for 6.5 Grendel chambering!

Add to the list, i'm sure i'm missing lots of great bolt actions that do .223 length cartridges already, lets get a data base. Barrett, Seekins Precision, Winchester, Thompson Center, Mossberg, Frianchi, Sauer, Benelli, Bergara, Uberti,

Make it a sticky too perhaps? Hopefully the manufacturers get wind and get on board...better not just be all 6 Arc Wink

Some dude from Weatherby told me back in April "Weatherby had no plans to utilize or make a version of the Howa Mini action"

The Sako Carbonlight would be quite good in Grendel.
potential problem are:
Action strength rated for 223 but not necessarily 50% more powder like the Grendel.
Can the bolt face be opened out enough and will it feed ?
The barrel needs to be shortened from 18" to 16" but its fluted so would look awful.
Darned expensive - a gun for the 1%

I have an old Sako Vixen but ones made for PPC cases are uncommon.
Mechanically the 85 action is streets ahead in many features.

doesn't need to be 16"...18" would be ideal on the carbon or finnlight, 20-22" for a standard sporter, would have to think it's more pressure based, we have wimpy 52,000 psi factory, and i'm sure .223 is higher and 6ppc they run them up there i bet too, so any money that sako xs is stronger than the AR's Wink

hill37 Wrote:Some dude from Weatherby told me back in April "Weatherby had no plans to utilize or make a version of the Howa Mini action"

doesn't matter, they chamber the .223 in the larger one it appears, so open bolt face, change follower, put a 6.5g barrel on it Wink

that's what my list is showing, any models that offer either .223 or .300 blackout chamberings (AR length cartridges)...that means they've done the magazine work for the cartridge length etc.

If you can live with a 3 or 5 round magazines, the standard Tikka T3X model should be extremely easy to convert. All the parts are interchangeable, long action, short action, mini action, all use the same size receivers, mag well and bolt length. The action lengths are controlled changing the bolt stop and spacers in the magazines. That’s it.

I’ve run some dummy Grendel 120 Gold Dot rounds at 2.400 COL out of a regular short action mag, in a 6.5 Creedmoor and it picked them up and fed them into the chamber no problem. Tikka smooth! Cool

Get a 223, have the bolt face opened up, put the short action bolt stop in, then use the standard short action mags and it should be good to go.

Of course it would be even better if Tikka saved us the trouble but I doubt that’ll happen anytime soon.

A Sako would be nice. Had a 6ppc Sako for awhile that was pretty slick. Probably would have kept it if it had a tighter twist than 1:14” on the barrel.

But the ultimate would be the mini action that Barrett was supposedly working in before they completely halted their Fieldcraft line. A mini-action Barrett in the new 6 ARC, or even better in a Dasher/GT, depending on how long they would have been, would have been the end-all lightweight deer rifle for me.

I looked into this a few months ago with the Tikka. My gunsmith says......it’s better to bush the 308 size bolt face and open that up, then try and open up the 223 bolt. Apparently, opening up the 223 bolt removes too much metal from Sako extractor and causes an extraction issue.

Don’t know if this actually true but, he’s seems competent and has been right on a host other issues so far, and that is what he tells me!

YMMV!

I will tell you from first hand experience, I built up some dummy Grendel rounds with 120 Gold Dots out to 2.400” COL, longer than they probably should be for good bearing surface/neck interface and they fed perfectly fine into my 6.5 Creedmoor using the regular stock short action mags! The creedmoor action picked them right up every time so, there you go!

Tikka parts are not cheap, the want $369 just for a bolt assembly! Rolleyes I may be tempted once I burn out one of these Tikka 243’s. Until then, it’s not worth the money or effort for me when I can continue to use reduced loads in the 6/6.5 Creedmoor’s with H4895 and get identical Grendel performance and similar recoil. Granted, it’s NOT as efficient as the Grendel but OTOH, it’s way more versatile too.

There have been some decent deals on Gunbroker on Tikkas of late. I picked up another 6.5 CM Lite Blued version last month for $489 + CC fee & shipping. They’ve since gone back up to $539, which IMO Wink, is still a pretty good deal for a Tikka action and Trigger! Could probably sell a factory new Creedmoor barrel for $150-200 and recoup some of the outlay. Anyway..............good luck and keep us posted!

With regards to the Tikka, the standard .223 mag length is too restrictive for a bolt gun, IMO! Why bother?

My gunsmith tells me it’s better to bush a 308 bolt and open that up, than try to open up a 223 bolt. He claims, opening up the 223 removes too much metal from the Sako extractor and that cause extraction issues. IDK! YMMV.

I have several short action Tikkas but, not one of the 223 mini actions. I think the 223 mag will fit into the short action magwell no problem. The issue then with the 223 mag would be whether there is enough internal mag length, to make it worth ones while? Super long Grendel rounds, 2.400” COL feed well from the standard short action mags. However, more normal 2.260 and under rounds experience the same type of “Dasher” nose dive from the regular short action mags. I know both the long and short actions on the Tikkas are identical in overall mag length, it’s the internal spacer that differentiates the two, I think that may well be the case with the 223 mag as well. So you could theoretically run both mags, a standard short action for the longer rounds and then the 223 mag for the shorter sub-2.260” rounds. Assuming the Grendel will fit into the 223 mag? I would think it would, with maybe opening up of the feed lips. Should be easy enough since it’s plastic! Rolleyes

The other option of course would be, to try and convince an aftermarket vendor, Mountain Tactical is already making Tikka “metal” mag replacements, to make a “long” 6.5 Grendel mag available.

CVA Scout V2 and compact versions would be fun.

That would be fun.

Forty years ago Savage made their Model 24 combination gun with a .30-30 on top and a 20 gauge shotgun underneath. I think a Grendel/20 gauge would be the ticket.

Found this. Looked good. When and if they restart Fieldcraft maybe they will do a 6mmARC.

Ya they had quite a few requests for Grendels! Hopefully, beautiful action and rifle, this would quickly get on my list in 6.5 Grendel!

A Henry Long Ranger would be great, they already have one in Creedmore. I've asked and was told "no plans".

I've been trying to get Henry to do a youth single shot for ever with no luck.

I have 2 of the CVA’s in single shot and love them. I have a 6.5 creed and it shoots under 1 moa all day and a .444 marlin. If cva made a 6.5 Grendel I would buy it also. The CVA scouts are very good guns

Youth single shot in 6.5 Grendel would go over really well i think! 20" barrel at 5 1/2 to 6 lbs before scope, would be nice shooter for smaller shooters to get in the game.

Henry has a suggestion box under the contact tab. 6.5 Grendel is on their caliber list already. Let them know what you want. As a side note they are reportingly installing better triggers in their single shots.
