way off topic but for the single shot,,,,, - dammitman - 09-08-2020

i really didnt know who to ask so knowing you guys have lots of information here it is. i am wondering if a single shot thompson contender pistol barrel in 17 hmr could be rechambered to shoot 17 WSM safely? they are super thick barrels and i really dont think there would be a issue with pressures because of that. anyone have any input on that and where if so one could send a barrel to have it done? thanks and sorry for the off topic,,,,,

Rechamber isn’t the issue. The issue is the firing pin is location is wrong for the WSM.
Barrels made for it will be welded off center in order to locate it in the proper place.

Sure it could be chambered in a WSM but not advisable. The contender design has firing pins for rimfire an centerfire but that is not the issue. Contenders are not for that diameter cartridge and pressures.

That is going off of memory but I have been shooting Contenders for nearly 30 years and many different rounds and would not consider that as an option.

For Encore frames the rimfire barrel chamber is offset enough to use the same firing pin so like said it would not work.

The 17WSM is not over pressure for the Contender. A rechamber of what the OP wants, neither firing pin will contact the rim of the 17WSM.
There are some custom barrel makers that chamber this. Barrel is welded to an offset lug in order to have the 17WSM rim in the proper place.
Even then there are ignition problems, as the 17WSM rim is pretty hard.
Buddy has one for the Contender/G2 and the Encore. Even the Encore had ignition problems, he tinkered with the firing pin and got it working.

The OP would do well to just rechamber to 17 Hornady Hornet and go on. A lot of unnecessary headaches and cussing will be eliminated. The Hornet is over and above the 17WSM. The 17 WSM’ major issue at this time is ammo more than platforms. Winchester makes ALL of the 17WSM ammo at this time no matter who’s box or head stamp.
Any difference in ammo will just be from lot to lot variances much like other rimfire ammo.

sorry I had forgotten that round. a friend got a wild hair and did a wildcat on the WSM (Winchester Short Mag) down to .172 which is way overbore but would be over pressure for a Contender. Winchester caught me on their reuse of an Acronym, carry on

I'm not certain that it is off the table. The rim diameter of the 17WSM is only slightly larger than the 5mm Remington Magnum and I happily shoot one of these in my G1 Contender.~Riuma

do i understand that a 17 hornady hornet contender barrel could be made to work? are these barrels available?

Nope, if you rechamber I would do the 17HH from the 17HMR.

Without doing some measuring, I still think you will have ignition issues if you were to go with the 17WSM. The rims are a lot harder than other rim fires. Look at the pressures compared to others even the 5mm mentioned is not as hard.

With the hardness, and as far out of line as I think it will be from firing pin, you may well end up with an expensive tent stake.

I'm not certain that it won't work. The pressures of the 5mm are SAAMI spec's at 46K maximum. The Aguila ammo develops 33K nominal pressure. I'm pretty sure the WSM is about the same.~Riuma

well, i see that there is no for sure it will work way to have a 17 contender barrel made to work with the 17 WSM ammo by rechambering a barrel. i sure did want to have a 14 inch pistol barrel shooting the easy to buy 17 WSM ammo with my thompson contender. it would really be a great setup! i will keep looking into this and i bet will find a solution,,,,

See if MGM would make a barrel.
The 5mm barrel, it being chambered in that and not a rechamber. The barrel and or the lug is probably machined to center the firing pin to the rimfire pin to that particular cartridge.
I have seen this done for the Encore where it only has one firing pin. Looks way better and easier than TC’s answer by turning the OD of the barrel off center to align them.

thanks JSH, will make a call soon to see what they can do.

The G1 Contender was offered in 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum and it is not machined off center. I shoot one of these guns with a 5mm barrel. I shoot 5mm Remington RFM and the 5mm Craig wildcat: a CF version machined from Hornet cases. I simply switch from RF to CF on my G1 hammer selector and go. Best of both worlds.~Riuma

17HMR rim .2880
17WSM rim .3280
Never having played with the 5mm rimfire I cant comment.

The two 17RF’s I have went through shall we say a few, bricks.

The 17WSM is a whole different animal than any other rimfire. Proper placement of the firing pin is essential for good accuracy and ignition on rimfires. A huge amount of information can be had with Bill Calfees book on rimfires.
The 17WSM demands a very heavy firing pin blow. Don’t ask how I know.
I have a cartridge that was repeatedly tried until it went off. There were around 18 strikes before it went off.
I have a Savage Bmag. Yes it looks like a 3rd grade engineer designed it with a crayon on a big chief tablet. I have tinkered with mine enough that I have come to the conclusion until some one else starts making ammo other than WW, it will be what it is. It will and has shot little cluster groups. Then only to shoot patterns with the same box of ammo later. I will say it is a MOA gun for the avaerage day.
I know others that have spent a pile of money and glean no better results than I have. Most have come to the conclusion that it is not a lack of quality gun or barrel, but ammo.

If I were in the shoes of the OP, knowing what I know, the only TC product I would give a try is the Encore. Simply because of the mass/weight of the hammer for consistent ignition.

I advise to just go to the 17HH on a Contender and be happy.
A rechamber of an existing 17HMR may well end up a some what expensive lesson, going on by guess and by golly.

After having shot IHMSA since the mid 80’s with Contenders of all calibers and types, I changed hammer springs on a fairly regular basis.

A question I alway have regarding a so called G1. How come there was never a G1 until a G2 arrived on the scene? All we ever had prior was a Contender, never anything regarding a number. There were the early “hard to open” frames and the “easy to open” frames always still refered too as a Contender. The “G” can’t properly be said to refer to generation either, as there were numerous changes prior to the Encore and the G2.
