Greetings all. I'm retired and have been hunting since I was 9 or 10. Shot smallbore 4 position for many years into my late teens. Even went to Camp Perry for competition back in the 70's. I'm a little late to the game for the 6.5 Grendel. My plan is to purchase a bolt action for my daughter who is learning to hunt. She started hunting a few years ago after taking my Howa .223 Rem. So far she's been harvesting antelope and a couple of well placed shots on buffalo with it. I finally convinced her it's time to move up in caliber. I haven't decided on a Howa Mini action or the Ruger American Predator with the AR15 mag. CZ 527 would be nice but I don't even seen them for sale online like I do for the other two rifles. I like the idea of the AR15 mag and the longer barrel. However, I love the Howa's I've owned and find they are very well made. My hesitation is the 20" barrel. I'm hoping to squeeze out as much velocity as I can so the Ruger is looking good.
Because I'm late to the party 6.5 Grendel ammo and brass is harder to find than a spotted owl. I ended up purchasing a couple of hundred rounds of once fired 7.62x39 brass. So far I've full sized them, turned the necks to .012-.0135 wall thickness. I also annealed them with my annealeez. Fortunately, I have some powders that will work in several of my other guns. Primarily H335 to be specific. Until this ammo shortage gets better that's what I'm stuck with.
I hope to get a much advice as possible on getting whatever 6.5 Grendel up and running for my daughter and I.

Welcome to the clan, gw, from the great nation of Texas! If you haven't already done so, I cannot recommend enough that you pick up vol's 1 and 2 of the Grendel Handbook. It has a lot of reloading info and a great deal of info which can help you choose directions ( gas or bolt or both ? ).

Welcome to the forum gmww! Just a reminder the case capacity for fire formed x39 brass will be less than 6.5 Grendel brass. Starline brass will post on their web site you can back order 6.5 Grendel brass. Many orders placed this way ship within a short period of time.
Last week Starline opened the back order. It is not available when I just checked but it is worth watching. Midsouth Shooters Supply tends to get Hornady brass frequently.

Thank you very much. I checked earlier but it did not have the back order status. I checked again a couple of hours later and I was able to order 250!

Thanks for the offer! I live up in Whatcom County. I'm going to see how the h335 does in whatever rifle I get. I may end up contacting you if I can't get it squared away. Already dreaming about next years hunts.

Welcome from also WA state. I've a similar backstory, and also recently got into the Grendel. Fun so far, but as others have mentioned, finicky getting the gun running well. Love the caliber and hope to get a bolt gun eventually.
