6.5x39 - Doon - 02-05-2015
In the process of building two bolt Grendels but have picked up a sweet 6.5x39 zastava, but having trouble finding published reloading data.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a bolt action rifle converted from 7.62 X 39 to 6.5/264 using the original action? If so I have seen reference to the 6.5 Grendel as 6.5 X 39 or 6.5 X 38. I have never heard of a factory manufactured rifle by Zastava with mini Mauser action in 6.5 X 39 but they have a 7.62 X 39. There have been a couple of AK varients modified to 6.5 Grendel using the AK bolt.
Can you provide additional details but it sounds like you would use 6.5 Grendel loading data.

It was a 7.63x39 rebarreled to 6.5x39, quite a common conversion here in New Zealand so im lead to believe! It is not a Grendel as it has the tappered case as in the AK round.
So basically a 7.62x39 necked down to 6.5, it has special dies for it called CH4D.
I will probably have it reamed to Grendel once my other Grendel bolt gun is ready.

Oh sorry, I didn't catch you were from New Zealand. I have considered buying one of these actions and having a 6.5 Grendel bolt action assembled here in the US. I hope Howa introduces the 6.5 Grendel Micro action so I won't have to do a custom build. I can build another AR-15 cheaper than a custom build bolt action whether I buy a used rifle or new action.
Very nice rifle maybe someone else will chime in.

measure the case capacity of your cases with water and compare to Grendel capacity then reduce grendel loads by the same factor and reduce by an additional 10% for starting loads in a bolt action with the reduced case capacity you can probably just fill the case with grendel type powders and be fine what is your powder availability

also when it comes to reaming you will need to seat the barrel back as well the grendel is only 38mm

Well, you can round it either way, but, technically, it's 38.6mm (1.520").

Doon, check with Von Gruff- the Grendel Max chamber may be worth a look see as an option for you. He has 123 grn. bullets @ 2700 fps.

Thanks but I have already ordered my reamer from midway, 264 lbc.
I plan on 3 grendels so want to stay conventional as my boys probably wont reload in the future.
Received the 6.5 x 39 today with some fired brass and reloads.
just for amusement I did a water capacity test on a fired round 6.5x39 and a new piece of grendel brass.
6.5x39=32.6 gns
grendel=34.7gns
Also pulled a reload and measured 24.5 gns of adi 2207.
Since adi has a max load of 25.5 gns of 2207 for the grendel I thought this was a warm load with flattened primers on the spent brass, this also could be because the rifle is suppressed.
I noticed this on my mini 30 when I shortened the barrel and suppressed it, got a stuck case on the fifth firing, never had this before when it wasn't suppressed.
The zastava mini Mauser is a neat little rifle, 2.5 kg with suppressor off.No scope
When the reamer arrives I think I will change it to grendel.
