This is what the 22 nosler should have been. The ability to shoot the longer higher bc 224 bullets is a big improvement. From a target stand point it's legit. Why not the 6mm? That is a valid point. I can only speculate on the popularity of 224 in the AR crowd versus anything 6 mm. For hunting give me a heavier bullet and at nominal ranges I'll take the Grendel. Yes folks have been wildcatting both the 6.8 and 6.5 cases for years. Whitley has the 6mmar, ARP has done 224 and 6mm on both the Grendel and 6.8 case.

Then there is my AR15 based Olympic Arms 22-250 1 in 8, 24" that blows these silly pop guns so far away as to vanish.

I, not he, owns the 22-250, that happily shoots .224 heavy bullets faster than anything available to fit on an AR 15 platform.

Back to the actual thread - nine months later Hodgdon actually FINALLY published 22 Nosler load data. Ie, someone other than Nosler put their name on something related to the caliber. Must have been a phone call or two from Bend after Federal's announcement.

Most interesting is that they have data for mid to heavies (60 gr and up) with H4350 and IMR4451 and those actually give some of the best velocities. Nosler had no data for those, I never thought of it and although I haven't really looked in few months, no one on the World Wide Web had talked about it. I might give it one last try since I have both powders. Slower powder actually makes sense. Maybe, just maybe the slower powders change timing enough to relieve stress on the case head.....

But interestingly, they have data for 90 gr SMKs at a COAL of 2.42 with max velocities around 2750 from a 24". Obviously would require single feeding, but the 22 Nosler case at that length is going to have a lot more capacity than 224V.......

I couldn't help but notice that the source (Nathaniel F at TFB) chose a slick bullet for the Valkyrie, and all SMK's for the rest, so I decided I would try to re-run the numbers with an evened playing field.

I also noticed his BC for the 90 gr VLD was significantly higher than Berger's own posted G7 of 0.274, so I ran with the corrected BC.

Next, I chose a tried and true 123 Scenar for the Grendel. It is a solid choice for VLD comparisons.

Lastly, I updated the 77 grain from the SMK to Berger's Tactical/OTM, with an improved .192 G7 BC. Because the Wylde was simply the same projectile running 50 fps slower than the 22 Nosler, I omitted it entirely as being redundant.

I kept all the velocities as previously posted, and ran the numbers using the Applied Ballistics engine with standard atmospheric and temperature values. With the playing field now evened, the results are somewhat different.

Even still, the Valkyrie does maintain a slight edge on drop and windage, but never gets close for retained energy at any distance.

Well, as I sit here slightly upset with myself, I can only surmise that I fat fingered the selection from the Applied Ballistics drop down. A Lapua 136 ScenarL (next projectile down) has a .288 G7.

With apologies to the Horde, I will rerun the charts when time permits.

In the meantime, here are the correct #'s for the 123 Scenar, using Brian Litz's measured .265 G7 bc.

Keep in mind that the Valkyrie is inevitably compared to the Grendel-based variant of the same caliber. In turn, as the OP indicated, we want to compare performance of other bullet diameters in Grendel-class cartridge lengths and powder capacities.

So, yes, this forum is a happy place for the discussion.
