I have read that the M855A1 accomplishes it's velocities with pressures almost to the proof load pressure limit. Barrel life is half of the other 5.56 rounds and new magazine follower's are needed to prevent damage to the receiver. This may be false but the M855A1 round has had it's detractors. The gel test is very impressive but I would like to see this ballistic gel test out to 4-500 yards. I do know M855A1 round is a very expensive bullet to make. Another great find stanc, thank's for sharing.

IIRC, Gary Roberts once said that terminal performance of rifle bullets at such long distances tends to be minimal, regardless of caliber or bullet type. (Example below.)

I would agree, so no real terminal improvement with the M855A1 bullet at distance would be the conclusion.

I dunno who he is, but as for the second part of your question, he says:

Yeah, I sent this bullet idea out 20 yrs. ago as a killer 5.56 idea-

then the splitter, a .308 that splits lengthwise into 3 longitudinal sections as it hits the target, Nasty, nasty wounds.

All are being loaded at Federal ammo.

The flash/explosion in the gel hasn't been very well explained so far. The best explanation I have is that the hot bullet vaporizes some of the gel (which is flammable) and between the friction, heat of the bullet, and air being sucked into the temporary stretch cavity, as the TSX collapses it acts like a diesel engine and compresses the mixture of heated gel vapor and air until it explodes. You can see the exhaust gas exiting the entrance hole.

And the shooting berms on the ranges as well as the steel deflector plates on the RETS target systems.
We had to revamp all the RETS ranges on all 5 TRADOC posts before we could even fire these rounds during BCT/ AIT training.
