Why you should cryo your gun parts.

Faxon claims that modern heat treating methods are more effective at relieving stress than cryo ever was. Based on all the tests I've seen where their pencil barrels maintain consistent POI when hot or cold (as opposed to stringing shots), I am inclined to believe them.

Just felt compelled to thank the senior members of this forum for maintaining the community standards. Otherwise, those less experienced, and who don’t know certain historical facts might get taken in by the shills for the 3-card Monty dealer. I appreciate the way this was handled.

I have been monitoring what has been said about this cryo treatment. I should say that I have all my barrels cryoed and I still push the barrel past what it can do. In Ranger Battalion I was tasked out to a lot of different people. I got to see a lot of different things that different people in the industry liked to do to their barrels. solid titanium, titanium wrapped in carbon fiber, stainless steel wrapped in carbon fiber. Hand-laid carbon fiber/Kevlar® composite stocks. I even made friends with a gentleman in northern Arizona and had him make me a progressive twist 32 inch long barrel for my 300 ultra with a carbon fiber wrap. Its starts at 0 twist and goes to 1 in 9 twist at the muzzle.. I have all my bolts even my triggers cryoed. I know a couple of Marine snipers, SF snipers, CAG snipers and others that like the process but at the end of the day or in whatever hole we might find our selves in we still argue who has the better rifle of a cigar. Now most of the time because of who I know I get it done for free. I understand its not to awful expensive. But if you don't shoot a lot I wouldn't spend the money because you will not see the benefits.

I should probably avoid this thread, but I do have some experience with cryo treating steel. It wasn't with gun parts though. It was with my handmade knives. Here is was I noticed.

• It cost more.
  
• It made them noticeably harder to sharpen
  
• I didn't notice any practicle difference in edge holding
  
• It actually increased my warpage rate
  
• I had a few that came back with some really hard spots.
  

In the end I quit doing it. An increase in hardness doesn't necessarily equate to better edge holding. Again, this isn't gun parts but it did convince me that a proper and accurate heat treatment was more important than a fancy one. Even a good type of treatment/process can be done improperly. Here are a few of the knives that I made after I stopped having them cryo treated.

As far as cryo goes, I've known people to cryo pistons, rods, cams and rotors. Also, golf club heads.
Whatever makes you feel more confident in your game, I guess...

I knew I wasn’t the only one to smell a rat. All 3 from AZ, all 3 insist that we honor their claims of service and experience. All 3 are the same person, in my opinion.

Of course not. Everybody knows they have all cryo'ed everything they've got, including their kitchen sinks... garbage disposals sure work tons better now.
