Pendleton Stock Field Test

I hunted with a Howa Mini 6.5 Grendel equipped with Pendleton Composite Stock (PCS) for 3 days this week in Highland County while chasing bears with dogs. I'll do my best to list the details of each day and plug in pictures where they fit into the scheme of things.

30 NOV (Day 1): Rainy and average temp of 50deg. Two guys drove the "high road" with the dogs in the truck boxes hoping to strike a hot trail. After a slow 12 mile ride and a few short hikes they didn't strike anything and they headed back to camp for the day. During that time my job was to stay on the "low road" and watch to see if the dogs chased a bear across from down off the mountain. I walked only about 2 miles that day and most of that was just walking the gravel roads to stay active and awake. Carrying the Howa rifle equipped with the PCS was a breeze.

also, tell me more about that grendel symbol in the bottom metal, engraved, decal? did it come that way from Wayne?

He did indeed, 3.5 oz was his response.

Knowing this my bare rifle would be 4.34 lbs before rings/scope. I'll be doing leupold fxII 4x33 with alumina flip cap on objective end only and having leupold shop put the new cds-zl elevation turret on it so i can dial up, this will bring the bare rifle weight to 5.09 lbs and adding the 9 round shell holder with 9 rounds in it will be 6 oz. Maybe one of my 2.5 oz slings to round it out if not in the kifaru gun bearer on my pack and full hunting with ammo/sling at 5.62 lbs and about 35.5" overall length.

what's the recoil pad look like and what is it made of?

edit, i'll be picking up the barreled action soon from having the 22" knocked back to 18.5":

assumed from previous weights between 22" & 20" lightweight (4 oz difference between barreled actions) and i've had action slabbed (-1.5 oz and bolt fluted and bolt handle knob hollowed -1.5 oz)

53 oz barreled action 18.5" barrel - slabbed/fluted action/bolt (3 lb 5 oz) confirmed 3 lb 4.5 oz without action screws (jan 6)
18 oz pendelton stock (ordering today)
3.5 oz oregun hinged floor bottom metal kit (ordering today with stock)
= 74.5 oz or 4.65 lbs bare rifle

2.0 oz talley 1" low rings
9.75 oz leupold fxII 4x33 with 33mm alumina flip cap on objective

= grand total scoped rifle at 86.25 oz or 5.4 lbs

i know 5 rounds ammo is 3 oz, so a 9 round shell holder with 9 rounds should be about 6 oz, and my 1" slings are 2.5 oz, that would put it going down the trail with 9 rounds and sling at 94.75 oz or 5.92 lbs...not bad

Since your ok with small objective lenses. I just got a couple of these during the Black Friday sale for $279. They’ll probably go back on sale again around New Years. 9.5 oz with a BDC with wind holds, that should make “dialing” only necessary for extreme ranges. The turrets have a nice solid tactile feel and easily heard audible click, similar to the other SS scopes, and they’re slippable. At $279, I like it. For $379, I’d probably wait until they go on sale again. IMO

Looked at those before, shipping to Canada would likely be an issue. It doesn’t matter though, I only run Leupold. Even if I didn’t have a custom/warranty within short drive of my house for pick up and drop off...I’d be Leupold only. I always seem to have to send any in for my preferred wide duplex reticle and now they’re all making their way back on for the new cds-zl turret that they just came out with for the smaller 1” tube scopes.

I just mounted one of these on a 14.5" pencil barrel 5.56 build. I like it.

I believe they are short eye relief which would be ideal for cz 527’s, I just like to be able to get matching speed dial turret in yards after I get the drop data. Not sure I’ve seen anyone offering laser etched matched dials for these? I tried multi aim point reticles...I prefer to dial.

The eye relief is pretty short. It could be a problem for a traditional stock, less so for an adjustable AR carbine stock. SWFA states up front the scope BDC was designed for a 55 grain 5.56 out of a 16" barrel.

Short eye relief shouldn’t be an issue on these ar length 6.5 or less cartridges. The cz has a short rear receiver to grip/trigger relationship making ring spacing where the turret almost always push up against the front rings. Ideal S the discontinued 3-9x33 ultralight or the 3-9x33 efr. Otherwise these swfa look like a good option but for me I’d need laser engraved speed dial turret options...Leupold I can get this.

LOP is 13.5" unless you request the youth which is 12". I don't know how to measure the drop at the heel from the bore axis. It has thin steel pillars and is made for a drop in fit for direct delivery. If you send in your rifle they will fully bed it.

This stock spoils me. It's real hard to carry anything else now. They all feel so heavy!
