The US Army's Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR) program seeks to replace the M249 machine gun with a long-range automatic rifle.

...the NGSAR...will “combined the firepower and range of a machine gun with the precision and ergonomics of a carbine” to achieve “overmatch” by “suppressing all threats to a range of 1200 meters”, all in a package that is supposed to weigh 12 pounds or less (unloaded), with both optic and “always on” suppressor.
