What we know so far:
-Perp was a 42 year old white male, with a pistol grip shotgun under jacket. Some are saying a Mossberg.
-CHL holder 1 was in front of him, engaged to some degree. Tried drawing, and got shot doing it. A hero, who likely knew this was going to happen that way, but it meant while that was happening, no one else was being shot.
-Guy next to first guy then gunned down.
-CHL holder 2 draws and fires from 15 yards, with a lethal headshot that drops perp instantly. Gun was a Sig 229 in 357 SIG fired on DA. While not an incredible shot, that's some skillful pistol-craft. I don't know if under those conditions many of us would have done as well. He is a NOT former FBI (though was a deputy back in the 1980s), who is President of a CHL company in Texas and volunteers during worship for security.
News coverage is actually quite heavy and mostly (ish) balanced. Though excessive (my opinion) emphasis on CHL holder 2 falsely being called law enforcement or former FBI (i.e. implying only LEO can save us, and citizens shouldn't have guns).
Main lesson: A CHL left in the car is useless. A CHL that is not loaded and ready to go, might just get you killed. A 1-shot drop headshot upon rapid draw at 15 yards, can be a real need. I.e. that .380 LCP might well have gotten CHL 2 killed, if that's all he had. A sobering lesson.
I'm not convinced this was a mass-shooting intent. Based on the criminal record and age of assailant, it's possible he was trying to armed robbery of the collection plate. Based on his many prior arrests with few convictions, the criminal justice system has spent 42 years teaching him that there are no real consequences to his bold criminal behavior.
