Answer “never”
Holding someone at gunpoint or whatever till police arrive is false imprisonment, and you will be the one facing time.
I grew up in New York City area,mid 70’s to mid 80’s. If you were caught stealing in a store, they would lock you up in the store basement till the cops got there. The liberals ended all that stuff. Criminals have more rights than citizens nowadays. And if you use a gun to defend yourself, the liberals are going to try to use that against you too.
