BFT, my understanding is that the laws vary state to state (Castle doctrine for example). A lot of law is what a reasonable person would do in the situation, self defense invoked when you have a reasonable fear of injury to yourself or another. I think there is a clause about you can use force to protect your property as well.
There is also the saying "If you would have peace, prepare for war!" A strong show of force can often can have a deterrence effect.
