One great thing about the 2A, it places no limit on how much ammo you can own. Local codes are another matter.
I can tell you that 20 or so 50 cal cans with 1000 in each, stacked takes up no more than around 3 sq. ft. or less. I wouldn't recommend storing the bulk of ones ammo in your house. An appropriate qty. for your situation, of loaded magazines in the safe and or range bag, yes.
Haven't considered how much I need in a firefight. To me it is a moot question. All my planning surrounds how much I normally use in a year, without having to replenish. So a two year supply is appropriate for me, in 5 calibers and half that in 4 others. Everyone's mileage may very.
