The main point is that once you separate yourself from your family and neighbors, the people who control information can label you however they want.

They can and will accuse you of things that you aren’t guilty of, and use those accusations to justify LE to target you.

The police don’t know what anyone is doing and you don’t want their first encounter with you to be, “We have a warrant for XYZ for Billy B. Bumrump militia member engaged in gun crimes, anti-government sentiment, etc.”

And for those who think this was all in the past, that wouldn’t happen again, guess who the US Attorney General was during the Weaver family raids? Guess who defended the actions of the FBI sniper who shot Vicky Weaver through her head?
