Societal rights and priviliges are obviously different between our countries.
No we don't have the right to bear arms, only privilege. And only 3% of our population (700K) are gun owners. We do not derive a cultural sense of self from gun ownership, even though like you, guns were used to tame the indigenous population and provide food in the early days of settlement. You will find that most gun owners actually want the government to control firearms. To keep them out of the hands of nutters and extremists. For the most part we trust our government and have never had a civil war to doubt them. The concept of Gert Hofstede's 'individualism' is stronger in your society than ours. In Australia it is more 'we' and less 'me'. Almost no one is out there wandering the streets with guns. I am one of the lucky few who get to use military AR's on a regular basis. I leave my house unlocked most days and nights and I live in a city. There is crime here but to the degree that my house has never been broken into since moving in in 96'. We don't much care who gets voted in or out and accept democracy, and not just when it is in our interests. Life is pretty good and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
The National Guard is akin to the Australian Army Reserve. The ADF who are currently assisting the Police in Covid control are full-time. Hotel guards, airport control and checkpoints during Lockdowns. The static guarding done by the ADF frees up the Police to fight crime.
