So, Ukraine is passing out firearms to any one who asks. Great! And it is! But how many of those who now possess these forearms may prove to be a greater danger to themselves and those around them than the red-stared forces in front of them.
Many of us across these forum pages have lamented the bygone days when there was a shotgun in every pickup in the high school parking lot ( students and staff ) during ( in my neck of the woods ) dove season, a rifle in other parts of the state. And almost everyone had one or more firearms and we know how to use them. We learned from our fathers, from the Boy Scouts, from the FFA and a variety of other sources. But those days are all gone. The boy scouts are being taught about chastity belts, the FFA is teaching basket weaving and the parents are in mortal fear of the mention of firearms.
And we are primed to be the next Ukraine because too few ( outside of these circles ) understand the importance of what has been lost over the last couple of generations. Somewhere, somehow, we have to get back to a realistic form of herd immunity. Darwin was right. It is survival of the fittest but that might also ( or instead ) mean survival of the best prepared. Ive taught my kids and grandkids firearms, camping skills, survival mindset. And they fully understand the whys of it all. We all need to evangelize these same concepts.

I believe those who are getting the weapons are also getting some sort of training too. Somehow, I don't think the Ukranian government or military is thinking about the risks right now.
