One could speculate that either the current ammunition, or the next generation of 5.56 ammunition, will be 'good enough' to distract or disable at 500 meters, provided a hit is obtained.
Add to this the expectation that electronic sights will soon be about as inexpensive as the current generation of holo sights. One could then surmise that holdover for range would become a matter of putting the cross-hair on the intended impact point.
Wind will still be an issue, because I don't expect a technical solution to be both viable and inexpensive enough for the line infantryman in the near term.
