I have the same upper and the only thing it used to have trouble cycling was 55 gr Russian ammo. I fixed that by reaming the gas port out a bit and adding a 3 position gas block.
I know the sound you speak of- I've experienced it myself with some experimental bullets I had made for sub sonic use. 1 1/4" long .223 bullets don't stabilize in a 1:9.
They sure make a good WHACK when they it the target though- if they hit the target. 1:8 & 1:7- GTG.
