Old enemies often become friends after the war is over...

And that's not only true of individuals. It applies to nations, too. Allies in one war often become enemies after the conflict. Examples:

Japan ----- ally of the US and Britain in WWI, enemy in WWII, then ally again post-WWII.

Germany -- enemy in WWI and WWII, ally post-WWII.

Russia ---- ally in WWI and WWII, enemy post-WWII.
