NFS range where tracers are always prohibited. Stage 2 fire restrictions implemented Friday. It probably isn't that bad yet, but they are always cautious during a holiday week when the mountains are invaded by Denver and Texas.
Didn't matter. A guy and a gal decided to shoot tracers Tuesday. 3 homes destroyed. 5000 acres burning. 500 residents evacuated. 200 firefighters on the scene. 0% containment. And as of now, the idiots have only been charged with misdemeanor 4th degree arson. And summoned only - not arrested. Spending their night at home while 500 are in shelters or at friends houses.
So of course StoneHendge's range, which is on Town owned land was shut down tonight until further notice. Because shooting causes fires. One started a month ago by a guy shooting Tannerite. Then a relatively large one by 3 guys shooting what sounds like a gas bomb. And then 2 with tracers.
Be smart folks. And if you see anyone doing anything stupid - tell them! Or call the police.
I guess I'll be able to catch up on my brass trimming and load up for the fall.
This might be the year when all the beetle kill gets cleaned up. Hopefully it does not sterilize the soil.
Lot of BLM ranges on the East Slope have been closed for the same reason for near a decade. "Bullet hit a rock and sparked the fire" .
I have larger worries of shooting prone and the muzzle flash starting one up (seen that happen - rapid fire, not single shot in dry grass and pine needles).

Things slow down after tomorrow afternoon and I was planning on finishing the 264 LBC pistol tomorrow night and testing it Sunday. I won't know what to do with myself! Now i think I'm going to spend Sunday on the shoulder of I70E at the base of Vail Pass with a "Thank-you for staying in Denver next weekend" sign (with no offense to any Horde that may reside in Denver - you're always welcome!)
Unfortunately, I don't think my case would ever make it to trial. And if it did, chances are that half the jury would try to tell the judge my guns should be taken away.

Copper is actually the worst. I found this study when things were really drying out in June and brought it to my monthly club meeting as preemptive education knowing the board (which is a mix of trap shooters and grown men who like to dress up like cowboys for action shooting) would look to prohibit shooting steel up on the Chaparral hillside before anything else.
Copper really bad. Steel, bimetal jacket and steel core bad. Copper plated lead? Really not bad at all. I've been meaning to share this since then, but things have gotten too busy, but it's the sort of thing every club should know about. Not just for their internal benefit, but for discussions with local government when things dry out.
Ironically, a board member who's a LEO in the town where my shop is was insistent that you can't control and enforce what ammo people shoot. I guess the dipsh!ts in Basalt unfortunately proved him right.
But the scary thing is, with ranges closed, people are just going to find spots on NFS and BLM land where shooting is still allowed. And rocks are one of the favorite targets for the NeverSummer crowd shooting cheap russian and bimetal surplus ammo out of their AKs and big box ARs.
The problem seems to be that too many irresponsible people fail to face the real consequences for their actions. Litterbugs ruin ranges and fishing holes because if you don't get caught, you haven't done anything wrong. And if I do get caught, I'll get off because I don't know any better.

I was once a member and range officer of a good sized range in TN. The people I had to deal with sometime was unbelievable. Like once a cold line was called and we had flashing red lights that were mounted under the roof above the shooting benches that were turned on when the line was cold and signs that told you that when the line was cold you were not even supposed to touch your firearm. There were only three benches occupied that day two on the far right and one on the far left of 25 benches. The people on the far right were down at the 100 yards target back posting new targets when BOOM comes from the bench on the far left. I go running toward this bench yelling cease fire. When I get there the fellow says "what's the problem they were way over there on the right." I kicked him off the range and his membership was revoked and he was band from EVER being on the range again. Then there was Wild Bill Dumb A^^ I call him. Brand new member shows up to the range looking like someone out of the 1950s cowboy movies, two gun rig and all. Gets out all his "cowboy action shooting stuff" then proceeds to drag out these steel popper targets and starts to set them up at 10 yards. I go over and stop him and point out to him the signs posted telling him that for safety reasons of bullets bouncing back in the past and hitting people the range rules are no steel closer than 50 yards. He basically tells me, they did it this way in Ohio where he moved from, and he paid his membership and he would do what he wanted to. So as I was trained to do I pull out my new flip cell phone, this was a while back, and dial 911 for the police. He gets all upset and starts loading up all his stuff in his SUV but the police must have been driving by the range because it had been less than 5 minutes they show up. I explain the situation and they escort the fellow off the property and I report him to the club officers and they revoke his membership. The most dangerous people were the know it all, "I am a military veteran" they would tell me, people. These were the ones that would bring junk to the range and as soon as they had a problem with it the first thing they would do was turn that hot weapon and point it right down the firing line at somebody beside them trying to figurer out what was wrong. It is like an old fellow used to tell me, "You can fix ignorance with education but stupid is to the bone."
I would fully expect banning tracers in CO to be in top of the state legislatures to do list in the fall. Blame the tool - not the individuals. Using that logic, Illegal Immigrants should be banned (no matter where they are from)

At this point, warrants were issued 4 days ago and there's no report of them being arrested. When they are booked, bail has been set at $7,500 each. Yup, $7,500. Still can't find any pictures of them on line - the local "press" is clearly protecting them. Aspen is a playground for the Leftist Elite, so who knows whose kids they are. But with the fire now largely contained and evacuations lifted, the bleeding hearts aren't blaming the idiots. They're blaming the range and calling for it to be closed down. The idiots apparently "feel really bad" about what they did and are "sorry".
This is going to be nauseating to follow. The woman who was the one who admitted to firing the tracers that started the fire has hired her own attorney. I'm getting ready for then "she was just along for the ride and shot whatever he gave to her without knowing" defense. And he'll get off of any felony arson charges because she was the one who started the fire.
