Gendelized LR-308
#1
Is anyone aware of a round that does for the AR10 what the 6.5 Grendel did for the 308?

To me the Grendel took the AR15 from a marginal whitetail gun to a perfectly viable one.

I'm looking for something that takes the AR-10 from a marginal to effective elk gun. I think 6.5 CM is a bit light.

I'm aware of the 300 RSAUM and the 300/338 RCM. I think these are close but do not have the short case that the new long bullets need. I'm thinking it a fatty 7mm that falls somewhere between 7mm-08 and 7mm Mag is what I seek. Probably magnum width but not quite there in capacity. 7mm PRC maybe.

I know Nemo and others make long action AR-10's, but I want to juice up my existing receivers.

Anything out there?

Thanks.

So.... why again is the 6.5 CM not good enough...
what criteria are you using to tell if your new rig will be elk-capable?
yards, KE, drop, bullet size (yet bullet construction is more important)...

Grendels have indeed taken elk, bull elk to be specific.
They're not what most people would take to the hunt, but then again, it all depends upon which criteria you're using to judge acceptability.

And... to be true to the forum and this section, which Grendel-based wildcat/variant are you thinking of?

KE compared to more populer 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag mostly. Heck even a hot and heavy 30-06. Not saying 6.5 CM and 308 can't do the job, just wondering if some short action exists that could do it better. Wildcat cartridges are all about building a better mousetrap. I posted here more as a general wildcat discussion, not as a grendel wildcat

I just can't shake the feeling that we should be able to get more out of LR-308's nowadays.

Not hearing any counters, got now the SAUM's are the best bet I guess.

I have a dpms 300 saum. It's very accurate, but has a 20" bull barrel, so velocity isn't what it could be but it's still a pig to lug around. It also IMO needs a longer gas system, as loads with heavy bullets (over 168) tend to pierce primers due to the longer dwell time. Light bullet loads are fine. Function is perfect with the mag I custom made for it.

So if I wanted to lug a large frame ar around a mountain I'd start with the lightest receiver set I could and buy a magnum bolt from KAK and go 22" 7mm or 300 Saum, that's probably as good as you can do with 2.8" mag restriction. No idea how the prc compares. Go with a +2 gas system and adjustable gas block. Another option, if you want super long bullets is use the shorter wssm case in the large frame. You could get 06 performance with the wssm case, or so they claim with the 300 ossm in an ar15.

I built one in 338 Federal with that in mind, but a 308 would do just fine too without the added expense of going magnum.

Someone managed to get a 6.5 PRC running in an AR10. I suspect that you would have to either set back the bullets to mag length if it can not allow a 2.955 COAL or load your own. 147 gr @ 3020 FPS in a 26" barrel.

As noted though, Grendel has taken large game quite sufficiently, up to and including a Bull Moose at 100y.

Bullet selection and shot placement.

Catchy sig line here.

Guys:

What does finding a hunting cartridge for an AR-10 have to do with the 6.5 Grendel?

It's more about if the Grendel formula for the AR15 can be applied to an LR308. A lightweight AR10 short mag of some kind sounds like a fun one to have in the arsenal. I think the cartridge I'm looking for is probably a wildcat of some kind, hence the post here.

I found what I was looking for, 7mm SST https://shermanwildcatcartridges.com/

There isn't anything in the lower 48 that you can't kill with a 308. Does the OP hunt? It doesn't sound like it.

What is the 'Grendel formula'?

Not one to stifle anyone's creativity, but why would you want to haul a AR 10 around when a bolt gun is MUCH better suited to big game hunting. The only reason I shoot AR's is when I need to get more bullets downrange quicker, ie shooting pigs on the run, and/or calling yotes ( for doubles and triples). Any other occasions the AR platform is a liability and not an asset, IMO.

An 8lb premium bolt gun will out-shoot the 14lb AR10, will allow proper bullet seating depth, give you more velocity from the longer barrel, have a much better trigger, better ergonomics, the list is almost endless....

So I guess short CnC, Partitions and such don't kill elk anymore?

Guys:

I gave this one a chance to see if someone could take this into the realm of the Grendel but it didn't happen and now it appears to be turning into an argument over the merits of a bolt rifle verses an AR-10.

This has nothing to do with the Grendel. It has everything to do with a beefed up cartridge for an AR-10.

Not upset about it or anyone who posted.
