The only articles that I have read made it seem like they were targeting the hunter crowd, with PRS and LR paper punchers as an after thought. Simple classic bolt action rifles, light weight.

If the PRC is a non starter, because it's too close to a Creedmore, and not enough punch to the shoulder for the recoil junkies, at least I will have brass and bullets will always be available.

Reloading costs is just a touch more than Grendel. Factory ammo @ $1.63 per, relaod for .55. Grendel factory $.84 per. Reload for .47.

The question is did I buy a crutch for points at the match I shoot? Or should I have spent the money on training? We will find out when I try to hit a 5"x6" plate at 875 this weekend.

The PRC does have the shape most precision benchrest shooters want for best combustion. Just like the Grendel.
Should be pretty accurate. Nice rifle.

The single best bit of advice I got when I started competitive shooting is this. 'The easiest point you can make is the one you buy.'

I assure you that if you get some gadget that allows you to score higher, and you are serious about the sport, buy the gadget and use it. It is way cheaper than trying to overcome something that may be impossible to overcome such as reading winds to two or three MPH when shooting at long distances in ten to twenty mph winds.

And the PRC / PRS games seem to be gadget oriented big time. Basically a shooter has to be gadget oriented based on the speed and precision needed for some of the events. Probably the single most important thing is getting a very precise range, then having the capability of indexing it on an optic. So they shoot bullets that have a flatter trajectory (more danger space) at speeds that are as fast as possible without ruining their position.

About anything you can do to get a faster, more precise, firing solution is good for that sport. Any cartridge that gives you greater danger space without knocking you out of position is good.

Buy as many points as you can. Then based on your performance you will be able to focus your training time and resources more effectively.

Sandy got first round hit on this 9" at 600. I think I got lucky with the wind, as it took an embarrassing 5 rounds to get there with Becky . Wind where I was shooting was variable 1-4. Mirage and end result said north of 10 based on the hold over. Once I realized the wind difference down range (.5 mil) it was a gimme.

This poor thing needs to be replaced with some AR (thought it was). 300 yards and it was spinning 1.5 times per hit from Becky. Got a follow up shot (#4) while still swinging and knocked the stand over. Sandy got the first two hits.

How do you feel about the mag length? I had a 7WSM built by GAP and I absolutely hated the mag fit so I sold the gun. However, that was before WSM mags were made so I was using converted 308 mags and it was 7 WSM not 6.5 PRC. I'm looking to buy a custom action and I'm considering a magnum short action. I can't help but wonder if I'm just trying to talk myself into something I'll hate again? Defiance has medium length actions but that means I'll get stuck with a goofy stock and potentially unavailable magazines. I like the PRC on paper, but like WSM I wonder if it suffers from the same downsides? Your input is appreciated.

The PRC was designed around the non-binder plate AICS 308 Mags with a Factory COAL of 2.955. With a binder plate mag, you either set back the factory ammo to 2.895 or load your own.

I have not done any mag dumps that require me to do a quick reload, so the mag fit is fine I guess. Have to remember the mag fit is around the chassis not the cartridge...if I am understanding what you are getting at.

Not sure what downside there is to the PRC. It's in the middle upper end of the 6.5 cartridges on the market. Does more than the CM but does not burn the barrels like the magnums or beat up your shoulder after a 80 round day at the range.

There were a few other members here (New Zealand IIRC) that were trying the PRC out, and there is no dedicated forum for it, in fact not much on them yet at all. I thought I would start a thread where us Grenedel shooters that are also running the PRC could compare notes.

I meant COAL fit inside the magazine. Doesn't matter, I preordered a ARC action.

7WSM didn't really fit inside modified AICS (non binder) with 180gr VLD.

I am having good results with h1000 (AR2217),140 gn eldm and 143 eldx.

Fed 210 match primers, 58.1 grains of H1000, 2.362 to ogive 2.975 coal 3/4 moa at this stage barrel still speeding up.


The node was 58.1 gn and 58.4 @ 2940 and 2944 fps.

I got stupid lucky with RL 26 and 147 ELDM.

6 / 13 - SD/ES, a total of 54 rounds fired to find it and verify it. Sub MOA & 750 yards (5.2" 5 round group with only a 3" vertical spread). 54.14 grains gives me a full .5 grain (.25) on either side and maintain the same 3020 FPS (Same as factory ammo) in my 26" MPA barrel. If I choose to get sloppy. I try to keep it 54.12 - 54.16.

Now I just need to find more powder. I have 300 rounds loaded and 1# in reserve. Hornady, and two other boutique companies offer brass (as much or more than Hornady loaded ammo). I am on my 4th loading on the Hornady and no trimming, primer pockets are still tight.

As an aside to the "Non Grendel" Thread here. Snipers Hide has several load dev. threads on the PRC running, and the occasional cartridge thread. Still in it's infancy so it takes some looking around.

Again, For the Horde, I am fine with this thread getting closed.
