The vast majority (~99.9%) do not immigrate to the USA. As to why some do, I can only speculate.

LR1955 Wrote:Do you believe that our AR-15's should be banned and confiscated by our Government?
Absolutely. Not.

Absolutely. Not.

OK -- since you do not believe our AR-15s should be banned and confiscated, how would you respond to the incessant cries from the left to ban guns?

I'm 100% certain there is nothing we could do that would cause them to stop their incessant cries to ban guns.

Your premise is faulty. The issue is not a choice between freedom versus a repressive government.

It's a choice between freedom versus prohibitions on private ownership of some types of firearms.
Correction: Actually, freedom is not even an option. We have not had the freedom to legally buy and own guns without first getting government approval for more than half a century.

So, the choice is not between freedom or a repressive government. The choice is between what degrees of government "infringement" there will be on a supposedly unalienable right.

We have people running for the presidency that want to force us to accept, open borders, population control, un-limited genders, free medicare and health care, free education, free abortions for Africans, guaranteed jobs for everyone including illegals with a debt of over 22 trillion dollars. Regulate eating meat, banning plastic straws, shutting down our best method of accessing our oil reserves, censoring free speech. We have major cities with tens of thousands of homeless people defecating and discarding needles in the streets with the blessing of their administrations. You think it is a stretch these kinds of delusional people and their hordes of minions could never commit democide with antifa thugs running loose in these cities with virtually no consequences?? I guess we will agree to disagree who is or isnt sane on this opinion.

stanc Wrote:Yes, I ignore democide. That's because no sane person thinks it is even remotely likely that the US government will engage in democide,

Maybe not democide but I due believe as already proven the US Government will engage in control of its populace. Such as in keeping food prices at a high set price even going as far a destroying crops, cattle, hogs and milk. This actually happened during the depression creating a food shortage for the a lot of the nation. No question at all of how hungry some of the US population was at this time or the malnutrition of adults and children of the period.

The following years some ranchers and farmers lost everything due to not being able to pay mortgages a one time purchase of crops and cattle does not pay the mortgage the following year.
Low wage farm workers were put out of work. Estimated at 2,000,000
Government control: Yes

Democide: if you compare how Stalin controlled the Ukraine through starvation and FDR?s Agriculture Adjustment Administration under Henry Wallace I think the argument stands that you don?t trust government lead by Socialists, communists or the New Democrat Party. Henry Wallace was almost President.

Wait, what? You're telling me that some people are hypocrites??? OMG, stop the presses! We have a new headline for tomorrow's paper!

I agree hypocrisy is rampant especially in today?s elected officials! New York?s Mayor just stated last night that his protection detail should be able to have assault weapons due to him being an elected official. But the private citizen should not have the same right. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Your premise is faulty. The issue is not a choice between freedom versus a repressive government.

It's a choice between freedom versus prohibitions on private ownership of some types of firearms.

I take the words of the Candidates Running for President 2020 to heart some are for forced buy back some for outright confiscation. I think everyone?s choice is clear in the November 2020 elections. I think we would all like to keep our AR?s and other semi auto firearms.
The rhetoric I?m hearing not only pertains to the confiscation of firearms. It ranges in form of control of how we will think, speak, live, worship, work, and eat all of which is now on the table of discussion.

You do know there's a huge difference between what a candidate tells his supporters that she/he/it would like to do while running for office, versus what she/he/it can actually do if elected?

They are hoarding minions??? I didn't know that. I guess it explains why there's been a shortage of minions here lately. Cool

I asked how you would respond to their demands.

Lets say you were in a debate and had to present arguments in favor of our right to own firearms and specifically semi automatic fireaarms.

What would your arguments be?

Hmmm. Kind of like Russia in 1917? How about Germany in 1934. China in 1949. Cuba maybe? Cambodia in 1975? Venezuela over the last ten years?

Let me guess, it couldn't happen here. Even though someone like Bernie Sanders views Venezuela as a success story of socialism. Couldn't happen here.

Yes I been around long enough to realize that. I also know not to support a candidate that out right says they will sign an executive orders to ban all types of assault weapons, immediately stop all offshore drilling, stop coal use for power, change the way we eat and so on. As I stated governments do control their people in one way or another the best we can do is support the one we think will be better than than the ones who want absolute rule of you and I.
What other answer do you have? Stanc is there another Candidate that you particularly think will be better than Trump for 2020? Reading back to the 1934 National Firearms Act the Supreme Court pretty much looked the other way when it ruled on the law due to FDR’s threat to stack the court. Who is say it cannot not happen now when the left is threatening court to do just that if they get the Presidency and Senate.
As far I concerned it can happen hear.

I don't know of any candidate who has said she/he/it will issue an executive order to ban all types of assault weapons. And in the rather unlikely event such an order were to be issued, it would quickly be overturned by the courts.

Bayouhunter1960 Wrote:As I stated governments do control their people in one way or another...
Of course. After all, the purpose of government is to control the people.

I guess I wasn't clear. I see no point in responding to their demands, because nothing we can say will change their minds.

I've never cared much for hypothetical questions, because their usual intent is to set up the respondent to give an answer that the questioner wants. Normally I refuse to play that game.

If I were forced to participate in such a hypothetical debate, I don't know if I could come up with any good arguments. The only reason I have for opposing a ban on semi-auto firearms is that I enjoy owning and shooting them.

In reality, we are never trying to change the minds of the anti-gun horde, not hoard Wink , but the fence sitters who only get their information from the lying, anti-gun, communist news network. When you have an anti gun reporter claiming he got PTSD from shooting an AR-15, a video showing cnn's military analyst (ret)Lt. General Mark Hertling putting the semi auto AR-15 to semi full auto, or a california state senator describing an AR-15 as a ghost gun with a 30 Caliber Magazine Clip and can shoot it in a Half Second, I'm sure you could come up with a better discussion than, I like to shoot them. If not, I'm glad you are not working for any pro gun organizations.

Sticks and stones... :p

So, what arguments would you make "in favor of our right to own firearms and specifically semi automatic fireaarms" in such a debate with anti-gun people?

Ar type rifles are the most popular hunting rifles in the US today
Sport shooting with many examples such as 3-gun, multi gun, long range and explain the shooting sports are safer than playing football, swimming or riding a bike
Semi autos have been around since the late 1800's
Modern sporting arms are not so modern and less than 1% of all firearm crimes are from semi auto rifles
Even fudd guns used for duck, goose, hunting, etc are semi autos
They are not true assault rifles
The 2ndA is not a right to own antiquated arms
Every firearm is or has been a military weapon
A pump shot gun can fire much more lead quicker than any semi auto firearm
A person is much more likely to die from seeing a doctor than owning and shooting any firearm
Self defence is a right and handicapping civilians with restrictive antiquated firearms will not effect criminals, example Mexico just across the border
Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances.
Last but not least, the 2ndA is about division of power, not hunting, sport shooting or collecting. Example: democide https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/MURDER.HTM

Living near one of the most liberal cities in NC, I have a good idea of some of the anti-gun arguments. When it comes to removeable-magazine semi-auto rifles (pretty much limited to AR-15 or AK-47 in their minds), an anti-gun person will never feel comfortable knowing that there are people around who have enough weapons and ammunition to quickly kill everyone in their neighborhood.

They are terrified when they find out that many gun owners have 500 rounds, much less thousands of rounds of ammunition. They are even more frightened when they see videos of people doing tactical training to become even more effective at killing people. The targets have outlines of humans, don't they? They do not understand the sport of shooting and that someone might shoot many rounds on a range day for a hobby. The majority of people in many american cities have never touched a firearm and see them only as devices for killing. I have been frustrated that although I bought air-rifles and archery equipment for my two children, they have had no interest in participating in these, what I always considered "normal American," activities.

I think that it would be fair to say that most anti-gun people believe that the United States has evolved beyond the wild-west days where seemingly everybody carried a gun to defend themselves from other (bad) people with guns. They think that it is ridiculous to believe that our own government might turn against us and view those that do believe and prepare for that eventuality as dangerously paranoid.

In short, it is a fundamentally different world view from that held by the people like us who spend time on a firearm-related website. I honestly don't know how to bridge that gap on a large scale, but I sometimes think of myself as trying to be an ambassador from the gun-owning community.

I met a family from France that was deathly afraid of firearms. As my family and I became friends with them, "I made a deal that I would try escargot" if they would learn how to shoot. The mother, 'who was the one most afraid of firearms" ended up joining my local Practical shooting club and competed for many years with my wife. Every gun owner should be an ambassador to the shooting sports and gun ownership. They explained to me that years of TV and movies had made them fear firearms, until they actually experienced how to shoot safely and there was nothing to fear. Sometimes when a person has lived with firearms like I have all of my life, "where everyone has a rifle or pistol at any given moment" that there are people who have never shot or even seen a firearm. Living in the country," where help can be 30 minutes or longer away" changes most peoples anti-gun beliefs. Encountering bears and mountain lions is not uncommon where I live "and carrying a firearm when going for a walk" is as natural as carrying a water bottle..
