Horde, quick stock question. Howa HTI stock, is it free floated? Can you slip a bill?

I just put my 22 inch thin contoured Howa Mini 6.5 Grendel back in its factory stock. And tightened it down both screws to snug, then tightened front screw to 50 inch pounds. Then I tightened the rear down. There is NO clearance in the front of the barrel channel. It reminds me of the Weatherby stock, pressure being applied in an upward manner to the barrel. Have any of you experienced this? Thanks A2

50 inch lbs sounds like a lot. I think savage and Ruger might be around 25-30. Have you backed it down a little to see what happens?

Ruger is around 60 in/lb.~Riuma.

The Howa Mini owner's manual says 50-55 in-lbs torque on the action screws (page 23).

I put a couple of strips of HVAC foil tape under the recoil lug. Helps lift the barrel up a few thousandths and gives more clearance. It still seems to be fully intact with little or no wear after probably a 1000 rounds now.

Haven’t tried it with the Howa yet but with the Savages, you can further tune your groups by adjusting the action screw torque.

Basically I start with full value torque on the front screw, then start with whatever minimum you feel comfortable with on the rear, say 15-20 inch pounds, shoot a group. Then work your way in 5” lb increments until you find the sweet spot.

Tighten down the rear screw first and dont go over 40 lbs of torque unless you absolutely have too.

My howa grendel I had and sold to my best friend loved to be at 35 lbs on the rear and 30 on the front screw. But I had it in a Boyd's stock and hokiepokiekids bottom metal. So that may why, the plastic stuff howa uses might flex differently.

Check barrel clearance with a peice of note book paper folded in half. If it clears that you have plenty of clearance.
