Magpul Hunter American stock
#81
Got an AI mag 5 rd and installed the primal rights conversion in it, took some tweaking of the feedlips but it loads pretty well now with AG ammo, also got the 10 rd accurate mag .223, it is just a AI mag with a plastic insert that fits inside so it will hold .223 rounds. The insert holds the round forward just like the primal rights conversion, had to grind quite a bit of the insert to get the 6.5 rounds to feed but it does ok now, although it only holds 8 rds of Grendel. I think I will use the AI 5 rd for hunting and keep the 10 rd (8 rd grendel) as backup or when target shooting.

Well I took a stock ASC mag, without any foil tape, and bent the feed lips and got it working pretty reliably. On par with the “taped” mags. I’m calling it a success. Cool

In the interim the Howa arrived and it is night and day between the two. The feeding and extraction with it is flawless, sublime, in fact, I couldn’t make it malfunction. On top of that, it easily shoots AG sub MOA. Life is good.

So, with the Howa good to go, I put the RAP back in the Hunter stock (again) and went about bending the feed lips. So far, it’s not working for me. What worked with the AR mags, is not working with AI\PR conversion. I can get either the first 4 or the last 1 to feed reliably, but not both at the same time. Gonna sit on it for a while and ruminate, not giving up, just pacing myself. Big Grin

FWIW: Called Primal Rights to see if they could offer any tips/suggestions and they acted like they never heard of anyone having any problems. Really, well, they should come log on the Grendel forum then! Big Grin “Josh” at PR took my number and was going to ask around the shop and get back to me. So, when I hear back from them, I’ll pass it along here.......

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread, it has been enormously helpful in working on my RAP Grendel setup. I have gone with the Magpul hunter, the AICS 308 10-rd metal mags x2 with the primal rights conversion kits x2. So, that's over $500 dollars dropped into this $400 gun... and after hours of tinkering with the mags, I'm at about 90% success, 10% jams. Although this seems ridiculous, I did achieve the goal of getting additional room in the mag to increase the COAL. With the AR mags in the factory setup there is literally zero room to lengthen the cartridge (Hornady ELD with ballistic tip). Now I have about .3 inches, oodles of room. Just have to put up with the fiddly mag setup. It's a shame nobody makes a decent bolt-action Grendel. It's such a great cartridge, but with the Creedmoor craze, I guess the market analysis is they won't sell anything. And so we are left with truly mediocre guns like the Ruger. It's still fun to play with though.

Dropped my Ruger Predator Grendel in a Magpul stock the other day. Much improvement over the factory stock. Feeds quite well out of Magpul AICS pattern (green follower) 5 round Pmags. The newer brown follower Pmags were a no-go, follower is different (has a small ramp to feed Creedmoor cases more reliably). Need to run the bolt fast though, slow is a recipe for the round to fall off the boltface and induce a double feed. Feeds 9 out of 10 rounds in a 10 round polymer Ruger AICS mag, have to level the cartridge stack on round 7. Round 7?s head is always too low in the feedlips for the bolt to pick it up. Also, fed perfectly with a 3 round Ruger polymer ACIS mag. Ordered some Ruger 5 round polymer AICS mags to try. Tried out a PVA Dasher kit in a metal AccurateMag AICS pattern mag...should have gotten the flat spring version, the wire spring version only runs 6 rounds before I need to press the top round to level the cartridge stack and follower. More spring power may be the answer, PVA notes the flat spring is more reliable.

Those groups are looking good!
I'm not so sure about blaming the flyers on the shooter. Could be various things and blaming the shooter off the bat is jumping the gun so to speak. Smile

Magazine conversion kit - Primal rights wants $19.00 for shipping. Seems expensive for such a small item with little weight.

Just installed a Magpul Hunter stock on my Ruger 6.5 Grendel Predator. Have the 6br magazine conversion kit, but I keep ordering the wrong .308 magazine. Does anyone know the correct part number I need for a .308 AICS magazine. The 6br conversion kit only works on the AICS short action .308 magazine - magpul magazine is a no go.

The ruger predator action/barrel model for Grendel has a bottom opening basically set up for an AR mag. I don't have that ruger with me any more but am going off of memory.
When I had one and was calling around, seems as though the mag would need to fit or narrow down to that AR-mag-style of offering up the bullet.
So for a magpul (which I'm assuming has a 308-style AI bottom magwell opening right?)... I believe AI or some AI-style mfr has a 223 version of that Pmag, that would fit into the standard AI-style magwell, so a 223 shooter could use the AI mags. Would that be what you're looking for? If so then prob need to tweak the feed lips some.
I don't know what the 6br conversion kit is, so if this is all on the wrong track for you my apologies.

AI Pmags got split into "2" styles a couple years back, one (original green follower) for the 308-based cartridges, and one (brown/tan follower) for the 6.5 creed type cartridges. Wasn't supposed to be a lot of difference, the tan ones work for me in my 6.5's a bit better than green but they all seem to work, least that's what I recall. I have a 308 and 243 using the greenies. My creeds use the tans, sometimes a greenie in the mix.

edit to add: you're going thru some of the pain I figured I was in for, so I sold the ruger and never got the magpul hunter for it. Now I did get somewhat of success with an mdt chassis, using an AR/Grendel mag but it was still finicky. Just sayin'.

Still shooting a Grendel Ruger Predator in a Magpul Hunter stock.

Best mags I’ve used yet: MDT 6ARC mags
https://mdttac.com/6mm-arc-mdt-metal-magazine-10-rnd/

Purchased 2 in their Black Friday sale, early tests have been 100% reliable.

Better than 12RD 6BR mags from MDT (which performed well with only minor hiccups feeding)

I have a BR kit in a standard AICS pattern AccurateMag that was suboptimal with a wire spring.

Magpul green follower AICS 5RD mags are acceptable. The newer brown follower versions not so much.

Don't waste yor time or money going with a Primal Rights conversion kit for an AICS mag to get the Grendel to feed properly using a Magpul Hunter stock with a Ruger American rifle. I have had good luck with a Magpul 7.62 PMag, but only loading one cartridge in it and positioning it forward some. It feed the one cartridge great, but who wants to drop the mag after each shot, just to load and position one cartridge?? What I did was get a single shot magazine, where you just throw one cartiridge in, take your shot, eject and then throw another in. Basiclly it's a single shot rifle.

Heavy compared to what?
What else is there in that price range that’s comparable?
As one who favors stocks over chassis, this is welcome news

Not sure if we are on the same page but here is what I bought. Very pleased with it. They also have a Sporter stock with a more streamlined forearm profile.
