Howdy all.
Ive bounced back and forth a couple of times on action choice but have finally settled on a 700.
I have a 700 action in 223 at my guy to have the bolt face opened up and a M16/Sako extractor installed. He is going to skim cut the face as well but thats as far as as this action will go as far as work done to it.
I found someone making RemAge barrels in a reasonable time frame. Going with a 16.25 varmint contour, 1:8 to run 129s comfortably. Will be run with a silencer.
I have a cheapy stock (for now) that I will run. I will do a hinged floor plate down the road, but this is a blind mag and thats just fine.

Thoughts on this set-up? Any thing on mag box I need to be aware of (its the 223 box)? Any other issues concerns Im not seeing?
Sounds good. I thought about going that route then found a CZ 527 in 7.62X39 and went that route. That was before anyone was chambering a bolt action in 6.5 Grendel

if you plan on single loading, then magazine box issues may be a "don't care" kind of a thing. If you plan to run it as a repeater, then you might also mention to your gunsmith that you intend to run it as a repeater and please check the magazine box geometry for reliable feeding with that differently proportioned cartridge than what the magazine box was originally setup for. And perhaps you might have to get a different magazine follower for the different sized cartridge. Have fun with the custom build!

Solid plan except I didnt send the mag box. Im looking forward to puzzling through this at home. Hence buying a pre-fit as opposed to sending him a blank.
I also have a chunk of wood, mesquite actually, that a member on another forum sent me in trade. Im hoping to finish it out as a stock in the relatively near term. It has some cool imperfections and I plan to make it relatively fancy. Well see how it turns out.

I hope you're not going for a lightweight or ultralight build. Mesquite is heavy. Gorgeous, but heavy. I hope you get years of enjoyment out of your custom build!

no sir. this is a GP/Do-It-All build. Ultralight wouldn't fit the brief.
Got her done. Everything functions as it should. Chambered a round from the mag box with no issues. Just one. Have not had the time to fuss with it further.

If you live in the land of guns and the 2nd...I'd watch for a ruger 77 stainless 7.62x39 boat paddle and do a barrel swap to Grendel. That's on my list for one day to have a proper stainless quality bolt action as legacy doesn't seem to want to bring in howa's in stainless like they get in other markets. There is some sako super short action options out there that could work also for a proper quality bolt action build that base off the right case face and magazine length. Just some other ideas and thoughts.
