My cousins in British Columbia want to secede because of all the socialist laws and taxation that goes to Toronto, plus the gun laws. Beautiful country in BC though-breathtaking.

Varoum, for communicating in English as a second language, you're doing a fine job, sir.

Like Hoot wrote, the COL you can use will be dependent upon your rifle's chamber. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but in my Grendel-chambered gun, I believe I start to hit the lands before I reach my mag length limitation of about 2.275". In my .264 LBC-chambered gun, I don't hit the lands until well past 2.3" with several different projectiles: Lapua 123, Hornady 123, Sierra 123 and 107, and Scirocco 130. The 130 takes a whopping 2.355" to reach the lands, well past the length that functions in my mags. I hope that info helps.

Off topic here, but you mentioned you planned a 24" barrel, so I thought I should comment. My LBC-chambered AR15 has a 24" barrel, and it's a beast. I think it weighs about 11 pounds without scope, mag, or ammo, and it's extraordinarily front heavy. It's great for the bench, but I couldn't imagine taking it hunting unless I planned to hunt only from stand. My Grendel-chambered AR15 has a 16" barrel, and with optics it weighs about 7.5 pounds--feathery compared to the 24" gun. I don't know what type of hunting you do nor whether you're a big guy that handles a 12 pound gun with ease, but I thought I oughta let you know my experience if that helps with any decision you make.

Do keep us updated about your progress with the gun. As you can see, your post has generated a bit of interest. Good luck!

With the 100gn SMK and A-max's I've been loading the last few days I can't get longer than 2.243" without the A-max bullet getting into the rifling and 2.250 for the SMK's. YMMV depending on chamber dimensions. So far I've been loading them so they just kiss the rifling. It makes a little mark around the circumference at the meplat but the bullets extract (loaded rounds) without any real effort. Any longer and I have to tug a bit on the charging handle.

On the accurized Mini-30 subject, an ol' buddy of mine and fellow range master customized his mini-30 and was able to yank just sub-MOA out of it which was very impressive. It sported a heavy barrel and lacked iron sights but was otherwise totally recognizable however when I asked him about it he wasn't too stoked about the kind of money it took to get there.

Any thought to a bolt action? CZ makes a really nice rifle in the 527. Single set trigger and I've personally yanked a .5" group from one. They come in 7.62x39 so it'd just be the simplest of barrel changes and no hassles with Canuck legal tomfoolery.

Oh and Varoum: Your english is better than at least 75% of native American english speakers. Even those that might call themselves educated. Be proud. You don't have an accent in text

I don't think the 24" tube is really useful. You'll get a little velocity gain over say a 20" but after about 20" I just don't see it being that useful unless you're going to do 1000M competition. 14.5" was a combat oriented AR-15. That length gives up a lot in the way of velocity but at 20-22" you're in the sweet spot where weight isn't as big an issue and you still get the top end of the velocity spectrum for any particular loading. A-max or partition are fine for hunting. Twist rate is going to depend on how heavy you want your normally loaded bullet to be. 1:9 is fine and appears to be pretty generic. I've seen some 8-twist but those are probably for 140gn bullets.

how many grooves and the whole 5R thing is more marketing and anecdotal than useful. I like polygonal rifling myself (Black Hole Weaponry makes some for AR's) because it's easier to clean. You want to stress over something, stress over affording a piece of glass that's good enough to go on top.
