Range Report from Infrequent Shooter :)

    Hi Everyone,

I don't get out to the range as much as I'd like but managed a trip earlier this week. 'First time out in probably 8 months...

I took my home built Grendel (16" BHW 264 LBC, 1:9, 3P) along with some 100 AMax reloads and factory Hornady 123 Black:

    100m, 100gr AMax, virgin Hornady brass, CCI 400, 29.6gr of 8208 - avg mv was 2526, SD 11

    100m, 100gr AMax, virgin Hornady brass, CCI 400, 30.0gr of 8208 - avg mv was 2536, SD 18

Some of this is luck, and the sample size is too small to be definitive; my other loads of 29.0, 29.2, 29.4 and 29.8 ranged from 1" to 2". But, it looks like the 100gr Hornady + 8208 is a winner, at least in this rifle. I've read others on here push them up to 30.4 so I may go higher than 30.0 next time.

And just for kicks I put a target up at 400m and launched 3 rounds of factory ELD Black.

No scope adjustments, I just held at the bottom BDC ring of the Nikon. Not too shabby.

I don't see anything wrong with your load as it is!

      ^^^^^^

You can chase a little more velocity, but it looks like 29.6 - 30.0 gives you a nice flat velocity spread and groups well. I think you have your 100 grain load.

The gents I shoot with chase ragged holes at 100m and pick off 'dozer teeth at 400m. I was comparing my results to theirs but I think I'll step back and be happy with 1/2 MOA with this budget built AR.

I don't care about velocity (within reason) so I think I'll call this one done and move on to 123's or maybe the 130 RDF's.

Thanks for the feedback! I am SUPER happy with 6.5 Grendel!
