    New Speer Impact 140GR

Grendel FNG inquiring if anyone has loaded 140 Grain projectiles? The only factory data I can find on 140 GR bullets is Barnes 140 GR Match Burner.

I ask because Speer has a new bullet, The Impact, at 140 GR with a .646 BC that will be shipping "late summer" according to customer service. $0.52 per bullet on Speer's website. They also let me know this will start expanding at 1000 FPS with full Expansion at 1400 FPS.

Based on 2400 FPS at 6000', Northern Arizona type hunting environment, here is the simple calculation using Vortex LRBC. Long story short at a 1000 Yards it almost gives you the energy equivalent to a .357 Magnum at the muzzle.

Looking for everyone's thoughts on if this Grendel Round, based on this theoretical ballistic chart, would be considered ethical to hunt medium game with at 1000 Yards. Medium Game meaning big Whitetail or Mule Deer. If not a 1000 Yards, what distance?

    Yards Velocity Elevation Energy
    (FT/S) (MOA) (FT-LB)
    0 2400 0 1790
    100 2294 0 1636
    200 2191 2.4 1492
    300 2090 5.6 1358
    400 1992 9.0 1233
    500 1898 12.8 1120
    600 1806 16.8 1014
    700 1717 21.2 916
    800 1632 25.8 828
    900 1550 30.8 747
    1000 1473 36.2 674

If anything else this could be one heck of a long range target bullet.

With the assumption of 2400fps mv (pretty high for Grendel and 140gr unless you shoot a bolt gun), the numbers I got using a G7 BC came pretty close to yours.

Speer has a reputation for very inflated BCs, like with the Scirocco II and its short boat tail design.

If they have corrected that with these new bullets, then the numbers pan out, especially with 1400fps expansion.

I would look more in the 2100-2350fps muzzle velocity range for an AR15, assuming this bullet fits in the case and can be loaded to magazine COL lengths in the AR15.

For a bolt gun, you can drive it maybe 75-150fps faster, depending on what action you have.

If the ogive is too long, it will be a single load or clipped magazine COL.

Using a G7 BC of .315 (my assumption) and a 2200fps mv, you're looking at

    850yds 1419fps 626ft-lbs 9.8 mils drop 1.6 mils drift from a 6000ft elevation pressure

It maintains over 900ft-lbs at that altitude out to 500yds.

Seems intresting. Let us know how it goes for you. I would try leverevolution powder with this bullet.

As far as ethical kills on game at 1000 yards. Their is no cartridge that gives ethical kills on game at 1000 yards. That's a tv stunt plain and simple and I will never have one bit of respect for anyone who try's that. Any rant over. Can't wait to see how it turns out for you.

The Speer web site has Grendel info on the 140 hot core.

The 140 Hot core are inexpensive $17.37 per 100

I bought a box to try. Not much luck yet accuracy wise, but I found out my Hornady dies/brass are not giving me enough neck tension to prevent some bullets to jump about .005 when the bolt slams forward. I'll try the rest of my loaded test rounds with the Lee factory crimp die and see if it improves accuracy.

Speer 140 Hot Core, 26.5 Win 748, 2.280 oal, cci 450, Hornady brass. 24 inch barrel.
        2276, 2258, 2239, 2264 (2.800“ group. typical accuracy, best so far is about 1.5")
        ave=2259 SD 15.4

        max vel=2338 per speer
        max charge = 28.6 C per speer

I used up the last of my Win 748, but it worked pretty well with the 90 TNT and is one of the better velocity getters for the 140's, so I think I'll buy another pound.
