    16" AR-15 velocities with 120 grain bullets

I worked up to 2315 fps with new starline brass, Federal 205M primers, TAC powder, and 120 grain Barnes Match Burner bullets. Is that all I can reasonably expect from an AR-15 with 16" barrel? Five 5 shot groups measured from 5/8" to 1 1/4". The only other powders I have on hand that might work are CFE223 and AA2200. It is a BCA left side charging upper with an M4 profile barrel.

Who said I called it quits....

I was using Alexander Arms published load data at the time. 28.8gr was and is the listed maximum load with that specific bullet and brass combo, though AA data used CCI 450 SRPs.

In the AA data, the 120gr Bergers maxed at 28.5gr.

You should give CFE223 a try. Hornady lists 31.2 grains for 120-123 grain bullets. They list velocity as 2500 with an 18" barrel. Your velocity should be in the neiborhood of 40-50 fps lower.
This is their max load. Starting load is 26.2 gr. at 2100 fps.

I was in the low 2400's out of my 22" JP with the 120 Matchburners and TAC. I think they have a lot of bearing surface which is going to cause pressure to peak earlier than some other 120s. I had the same experience with 105 MBs in 6 ARC - more bearing surface than some of the sleeker bullets.
              Let's go Brandon!
