Is there a case that I can reform to make Grendel brass???

    Howdy Guys,
I was wondering if there was a case that can be reformed to make the Grendel Brass? I do not want to HYdro!??!
Everytime someone post 1X brass for sale, you have to be Johnny on the spot!!! If I was shooting a Bolt rifle I would just buy new, but I think AR's are kinda ruff on brass??
And I don't allways find all of them, and I don't think the brass that is used in Mid price range has something other than brass??

Well, thats my story and I am sticking to it!
Thanks for taking the time to read this post!

You can take 7.62x39 cases and run them up into a Grendel sizer die then fire form them into Grendel. But the large primer cases do not hold up well. The case will also have about 2 less grains of powder capacity. If you have to but the cases you will not save money over the AA or Lapua cases.

Ace- buy the better brass, shoot it-- it becomes fire formed to your rifles chamber, resize ,-check for function, then reload. I've noticed lately my AA brass lost neck tension, after 10-12 shots,- so I followed the advice to Anneal the brass,,, from steel 89,====easy to do, well worth the time spent. ---OR-- If you Fire form-- 7.62 brass, Get Win. ,Sell &Bell., or F-C.-, don't waste time with old 80's & 90's junk , like IMI-Etc,- Too small of case capacity- anneal it -after the first shot .= ruff trip thru the diam . changes, from one cal to the next. Let us know how the annealing proccess for you- goes.... have fun.

You can get 7.62x39 brass $40/500pcs; if you have more time than money, it's the way to go. The only thing that makes me cringe about the process is the price of projectiles. Powder Valley has a great deal on 120g SMKs $123/500 and 100g A-MAXs $20/100.

An excellent and accurate load for fire forming is: 24g IMR 8208 XBR, 120gr pill with an OAL of 2.255" and a light crimp, Velocity is about 2350 fps out of a 24" Brl. It Produces very, well formed brass. I get about 5 reloads on my fire formed cases before I have to scrap them.

Where are you finding brass at that price? I can only find it for triple that.

Ace- you will not save anything by fire forming. I only fire form because I occasionally find it at the range and I came across a heck of a deal on 1000 pcs of virgin 7.62x39 brass. Even at that I only use it for blasting and sub-sonic loads because of the reduced case capacity. Alexander arms has the best deal on true Grendel brass currently.

As far as life goes, a well tuned AR won't beat up the the brass as bad as you think. I have 8 loadings on one lot of my AA (Lapua) brass that I bought back when it was nearly $1 a piece and it's still got life in it. The only brass I have lost was due to hot loads. I anneal every 2-3 loads and have not had one split neck.

Here is where I was going to get my next batch of 7.62x39 brass, and the price has doubled since my last visit. http://brassmonkeyoncefired.com/rifles-brass/762

Back when Grendle brass was scarce I bought 2000 cases of 7.62x39 IMI brass and resized it all for fireforming. I have not made it through even a fourth of it so far. It forms, and fireforms nicely. I cannot comment on case life as I have not reloaded enough to know how long it will last. Since then I got plenty of factory Grendle brass.

Thats right-jking--- save some money-to buy the better brass, if you can. I have 150 -AK brass, that was FF'd for a wkend shoot-out---range outing.,,-or - maybe use the brass for close-in deer hunts = throw away brass, in the snow banks, of Mn. . Oh well-you have brass for the future, no matter what pops up.

I have a bunch of Remington 7.62x39mm brass of what I call "range toss" (that brass someone else left on the ground).. Some of it has a small dent in the case as it was ejected out of whatever gun fired it.. From my experience the dents flatten out nicely once fire formed.. At least it does when fired in an AK - I assume it will do the same for the Grendel..

What I like about the Remington brass most is it uses small primer.. Though I plan on having a few hundred rounds of 6.5 Grendel brass, having some brass around which can get lost (hunting or at a match) might be a good idea..

By the way, it is a very good idea to first anneal once fired brass before re-sizing.. It makes the resizing job much easier.. Oh yes and Imperial sizing wax.. One last thing.. Check the neck wall thickness of the re-sized brass.. Since you are necking it down, the necks tend to get thicker.. This is great if you neck turn your brass, but can be disasterous if you don't..

Same on the IMI, my brother and I split 1000, and have been shooting it largely exclusively for a couple of years. I'd not go out & buy 7.62x39 given current grendel brass availability, but if you have it it works well.

As people mentioned there is slightly reduced case capacity, but velocity drop is lower than you'd anticipate. Also as mentioned, you will see slightly reduced case life on the large primer cases. I see 7-8 full power reloads on the IMI, and usually retire them due to loose primer pockets.

I tried the form brass Ak cases to the gren.... no luck with the AA set up...jam every time but pass the case gauge.

Will the bolt close on an empty sized case?

Is your die bottom firmly hitting your shell holder? When forming grendel from 7.62x39 it's critical the shoulder gets positioned right.

Also, what barrel/chamber is your rifle?
