    .30 Cal Grendel?

Has anyone ever messed around with this? I've got an x39 barrel that's a prime candidate for a new project

It seems like a Grendel in .30 Cal would trounce a 300AAC blackout with a supersonic load while still being able to keep the capacity for a subsonic load at mag length.

It would allow the use of .30 cal projectiles with more case capacity than a x39 and the ability to fire form standard x39 cases without re-sizing first (correct me if I'm wrong).

Just a thought. Comments/input would be appreciated.

Not being a smart ass, but why reinvent the wheel. If you using the blkout for subs, which is what it was intended for, the blkout is all you need. A 220 gn bullet at 1050fsp is the same velocity weather shot from a blkout case or a grendel case necked up. Now if you wanting a supersonic round, the grendel case capasity would win over the blkout. But why neck up a grendel to a 30 cal & loose velocity to gain alittle energy. I think the grendel is great like it is, & same for the blkout.

It's been done. I think Daniel Horner of the Army Marksmanship Unit uses/used one in 3 Gun competition. I don't see much use in 300 BO so a .30 Grendel makes less sense to me considering the price and availability of the donor brass (big advantage to the 300 BO there).

Yup, been done a few years ago. There's also a 7mm Grendel called the 7mm Ark, but you start to lose BC with the weights that case pushes, while increasing velocity. 6.5mm is the sweet spot for short-action cartridges.

Why not just load 7.62x39 with heavier bullets?

A 30 RAR might suit your needs.

It was more of an idea than anything.
I've got 500 pieces of Grendel and about that much in x39 which I don't see myself fire forming which led me to a 30 cal Grendel idea. Seemed like more of an all-around cartridge than the 300blk to me. But that's all IMO.

The 30 PPC is a common bench rest caliber used when shooting for score rather than groups. It is far more accurate than a blackout or x39.

That's kind of what got me thinking.

A lot depends on your goals.

The comments to date tell us that this has been done before and that there are several cartridges very much like it already being used.

On the the other hand, folks frequently do these things just because it catches their fancy.

I recently surveyed wildcats based on the Grendel and, especially with this post, found that the entire caliber range from .204 through .308 has been tried at least once, but not necessarily with the Grendel label. I did a QuickDesign rendering of a '.177 Grendel' and found something like a soda straw sticking out of a whiskey bottle. The neck down would have been extreme.

So, am going for this one: Hmmmm.......

Looks promising! I seated a 155 scenar in the Grendel case and now I can't seem to get the idea out of my head. I think that will be the next upper. A scenar at 2100 with a BC of .647 (IIRC) seems like it would be a fantastic mid-range, high energy caliber for the AR-15 platform. Albeit not as readily available at 300BLK but I think it's a decent start.

Speaking of Grendel based wildcats, does anyone have any experience with 6mm ar?

We may be approaching the point where we need to encourage the powers that be to open a Grendel Wildcats forum. Perhaps the title might be 'GrendelCats' -- who knows?
