lapua 7.62X39 Brass for 55 cents a piece.

Any use the lapua 7.62X39 brass and fire form it by shooting light loads? Its 55 bucks a piece so about half the price of Grendel brass. Does anyone know the case capacity? Is it more or less than say Hornady Grendel brass? I'm thinking i could load with 95gr vmax for plinking then once fired reform and load to full capacity. 7.62 primers seem like they are easier to get then small rifle magnum primers sometimes so would like to have that option as well.

XCR Even though it looks like a deal it will cost you a box of bullets to fire form them so that will put you in the ballpark of just buying Grendel brass. I have never found any large primered cases that hold up very long. I FF'd 300 Win 7.62x39 cases(Paid $.25 each) and the primers were loose after about 3 firings. They were also 2 grains less water volume. The only reason I FF'd the cases was at the time there were no 6.5 Grendel cases available so I would probably never do it again.

Most of Bwild97's load data for the Grendel was based on his use of 7.62x39 cases. They seemed to work ok for him.

Two grains less even with lapua cases? Generally Lapua has thinner brass with more case capacity than Hornady brass correct?

XCR That is correct with the Grendel brass, but I remember Bill Alexander talking about how the design of the Grendel case allows for more internal volume. The only way to be sure is to go ahead and buy the 7.62x39 Lapua brass FF it and measure.

I just went down to the bench to get some raw data on these cases. I have several different 7.62x39 brass brands, all have been sized in Grendel dies, but not fire-formed.

I took a load of 30.0gr of CFE, and dropped it in the Lapua 7.62x39 commercial brass with LRP. This charge went all the way up to the neck-shoulder junction. If I were to seat pretty much any bullet I have, I'm pretty sure it would be compressed.

It looks like total volume in CFE is 34.5-35.0grs. When I dropped this same load into a Lapua Grendel case, it went to the neck-shoulder junction, so it looks like a case capacity difference of 4.5-5.0grs less with the 7.62x39 Lapua brass I have. This was picked up off a range overseas. I'm not sure how much case capacity will be gained after firing.

Thanks can you post up more measurements after firing?

                Xrider,
IMI fireformed 7.62x39 case from my Grendel will hold 35.0 gr of CFE when filled to the top of the mouth. Lapua 7.62x39 fireformed holds 35.2 gr of CFE filled to top of the case mouth.
